I'd like to remove or disable the mplayer that came with R5.5 to see if some playback issues get ressloved by using one I compile fresh (version 1.0-rc2).

To accomplish this, should I do a:
Code:
# dpkg -r mplayer

Then compile/install the "stable" release for my testing?

I'd like the option to uninstall the "stable" version if things go South and restore the version that came with R5.5 but I don't know how to do it. I can uninstall the mplayer that I compile via the (make uninstall), but I don't know how to reinstall the R5.5 version.

Does it use dpkg (i.e. # dpkg -i mplayer) or is it more complicated/can it even be done?

Thanks!
