Just upgraded from R5F27 to R5.5. This was the smoothest upgrade yet, worked first time (thank you Cecil).

There is one small problem though, Xine cannot find the codecs when I run xine-check. It had these before the upgrade and now I am not sure if the upgrade has removed them, or if there is a script to get them (I recall there was a script to download them). I have already tried apt-get install xine-ui and libxine-dev (which didn't help and made lots of un-resolved dependencies). I how re-upgraded and I am back to a clean R5.5 installation (but still no xine).

Regards,

Algenon.

I am really stuck with this now. I have tried going back to R5F27, and xine will not work in that either. I have tried a fresh install of R5.5, and xine will not work. How are others playing DVD's with menu support?

Algenon.

What exactly does "will not work" mean? What are the error messages you are receiving?

I suspect something to the effect of "no plugin available to handle dvd" - If so, see this post.

The internal player works pretty good these days, and has menu support.

Sorry, I didn't give much information in the original post. I tried regionset /dev/cdrom for region 2 (UK). Then I tried xine, both from the mythtv menu and as root, but on both occasions I got the following:
Code:
The source can't be read.  Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g. no disc in drive).(Error reading from DVD.)

Any thoughts?

I've never had to set the region. Are you sure it's necessary?
Have you tried a variety of titles, not just one? If not, please do so (and check the condition of the DVD).
Try this with the DVD in the drive:
mount /cdrom
and tell us of any errors you encounter.
What type of drive are you using? Is it the standard Dragon one for the U.S. or Australia?

Mike

I have tried a number of DVD's and none work. I don't think there is a problem with the DVD drive since mplayer will play them ok (but mplayer has no menu support which I need).

I have tried a fresh install of knoppmyth, still no xine.
I have even tried Mythbuntu and that worked first time!

There is definitely a problem somewhere with xine on R5.5.

Sorry to say it, but if I can't get it working, I shall have to switch to Mythbuntu or MythDora (which I don't really want to do!)

Algenon.

WFM, but there may be some region 1 default set somewhere...

Have you tried running xine manually and checking the settings? In the files region is the media.dvd.region setting in the /home/mythtv/.xine/config file.

Tried changing the region settings both from the Xine setup screen and home/mythtv/.xine/config and it is still the same.

I have now installed MythBuntu and strangely enough, xine did not work until I enabled the w64codecs, libdvdcss2 and ffmpeg codecs. I recall that when I installed R5A30.2, I had to run a script at
Code:
 /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/examples/install-css.sh
to fix up the DVD problems.

I am prepared to be corrected, but I suspect that this issue with codecs has probably been missing from all subsequent releases of Knoppmyth from then onwards. Why was the script removed? Is it only me in region 2 that has this issue?

Just for some feedback, the installation of IR blasters on Mythbuntu is from the stone-age, I am back to manual installation from the command line (and still haven't got it working!)

If anyone can offer any suggestion to my problem, I would love to re-install R5.5!

Regards,

Algenon.

You need to install pineapple (just as you did for Mythbuntu). Search Google to find, for example, this page...
