I leave my Mythtv box on all the time. Even If I have not recorded any programs for 8+ hours the HD seems to be active. (The Light Is Blinking) I heve turned the front and back end off and it seems to stop. As soon as they go back up It starts again. I then went on to Set a time Out on my Backend so that iw would "Sleep" I set it for 724 seconds. I can watch the log and see it start the count

2004-10-27 11:32:57 MainServer::HandleAnnounce Playback
2004-10-27 11:32:57 adding: mythtv as a client (events: 0)
2004-10-27 11:41:26 I'm idle now... shutdown will occur in 725 seconds.

But then nothing.

If I shutdown the Front end it then counts down correctly.

This might be an easy fix....

When you select "play recordings" a listing of the recorded programs is listed. At this time, a small window with the image is played assuming you have the frontend set up to play in a small window. If you leave you stay on the screen that lists the available recordings then the selected program will continue to play hence continuously accessing the hard drive. All you need to do is go up one menu level before you leave walk away or you need to change the configuration setting to only show a single picture or no picture. If this isn't it, then maybe you have it set up to transcode your videos and it could be doing that. Just some possiblilities.

Have fun!

Why do you have a hard drive and CD-ROM drive on the same IDE channel? Do you not realize that the CD-ROM will slow down the hard drive?

HD that is sharing the CD rom is the os drive. I assumed that it would be a problem if I put both HD on the same channel. I was under the assumption that it would be better the system if the storage Drive HDC was on it's own chain. ?

Actually the way it works with IDE is that it will only go as fast as the slowest device. CD-Roms are slower on the bus and will slow down your drive.

This is all IMHO by the way. I have been drinking and it may not be 100% correct. :shock:

You'll get better disk performance by grouping your drives by speed. Putting a fast device like a modern HD on the same IDE channel as a slow device like a CD or DVD drive will cut it's throughput substantially.
