Do not expect PVR 500 support in the ivtv drivers anytime soon. Apparently both it and the PVR 150 are NOT real PVR [23]50 family members, but rather part of the unsupported blackbird family of boards.

That would be a bad thing. The 150 is appearing with prices that are just over half of what a 250 would cost. The 500 is going to cost what a 350 did earlier this year, but it's going to have two inputs (so hopefully less conflicts on the PCI bus.)

Newer information, there is apparently some development work being done to support the PVR-150, but it's still early days and quite bleeding edge.

Considering how cheap tivos are getting, even when you add in service costs (has anyone *really* spent less than $299 for an HTPC?) price is a big deal.

The reason for building your own rather than buying is more about controlling your own destiny and having a more capable and upgradeable box. Tivo has a long history of forced "upgrades" that remove features and break things. Even at the time I built my MythTV box the price of a Tivo with lifetime subscription was about equal. However my Mythbox has features even the top of the line Tivo with DVD burner doesn't have and I'm not at the mercy of Tivo or their fiscal solvency.

As for car analogies, the Tivo is a like a typical Hertz/Avis rental, a POS with lots of "features" but no horsepower, steering like mush, and no real control. Where a MythBox is your free and clear F-350 with a club cab, full towing package, winch, tool box behind the cab, ...

My experience with Myth so far has been four wheels, a ton of legos, and a tiny postcard that says "manual" on one side and "RTFM" on the other.

Close, but no sigar :)

I'm a new mythobox user, so new in fact that I'm still waiting to receive my stuff.

Todays status on the tracking of the shipment
Nettspor

But this forum, combined with others some articles and the knowledge that I can ask people - I'm 78% confident that I will manage to get my box kicking :)

I guess the deal with TIVO it's like an assembly line car, no hassle but then no heart either. And when you've got problems, you either scap it or pay through the nose to get it fixed :)

points for a very funny post!!! however you get out of myth what you put into it.. If you spend the time to learn, it WILL/IS rock solid. IF you put 5 min of reading into it.. youll get kind of uptime. =) My mom mythbox has an uptime of 78 days so far.. She is so UNCOMPUTER its funny she honestly gets confused howto shutdown windos XP. But she loves her mythbox and it doesnt let her down.. Read .. Learn.. Post questions.. You will see why all of us avoid the easier tivo route.

PS..
I'll stick to my scooter vs. lexus. Because a Tivo does.. TV. thats only 35% of what i do with my box. =)

I picked a real old fashion big-*** pickup truck for a reason. It ain't a car. It dosen't drive or handle like a car. As SUVs have proven so conclusively, most people who have only driven cars before and have no prior experience with other vehicles don't have the skills to drive a truck and do really poorly when they try to drive it like it's a compact car.

On the other hand the truck will go places and do jobs that the car can't even touch. You can't take a load of drywall to a job site, tow a horse trailer, drive down a farm road with 12" deep ruts, ... with a Toyota Celica.
