I have spent some time making sure everything is cleaned up on my end. There are problems I have with R12 that never existed prior to this. Or if they did, I was able to resolve them following posts here and on the wiki. Frontend stability is terrible. This stupid user does not fully understand what the hell keeps changing. I know the developers have said what gets changed, but damn if I can keep up. Simple things like what files to modify to turn off the freaking x screensaver. (yes I have searched the damn forums :-) ) What has worked for me all along to do this does nothing here in R12. A couple of months ago I started documenting all the posts and commands to setup the system after auto-upgrading. What files to edit, what permissions to change etc... R12 has made some of this (thankfully) obsolete, while making other parts useless. My wife is very familiar with how to restart the front-end, and how to bring up a console and /etc/init.d/gdm restart. And let me tell you how happy she is about that. It is my own dumb fault for trying to use this alpha. No one made me do it. I am going to try and go back to R4V4 and live happy again.

Errr, sorry.. I needed to vent. This morning I turned on the tv only to find that the hours I spend last night trying to resolve some of the problems, did not work for everything. I think the drift is fixed, but every morning the myth is no longer full screen and there is blue around the edge. Restart the gdm again... This is an awesome system and the Knoppmyth boys have done a great job. For me, I think I need to stay away from the alpha stuff now. I can't take it anymore.

I've found R5A12 to be less than stable as well. Overnight backend crashes are common, and the "IOBOUND - blocking in ThreadedFileWriter::Write()" errors are back. An that's with two Hauppauge PVR cards on a 2.8 GHz P4, which ought to be more than fast enough. Sometimes this even appears as two interleaved errors on the same log line, like so:

2005-03-22 08:05:59.171 IOBOUND - blocking in ThreadedFileWriter::Write()
