I set up a serial IR receiver using the wiki (great instructions - thanks) for an R4 machine - worked great. Now I am trying to do it for my R5A12 and have not been successful (followed the wiki as closely as possible with minor changes for R5 - obviously wrong though).

I have searched the forum (and wiki) to no avail. Has anybody gotten it working?

i was the one that wrote the original howto (now on the wiki) post for r4v5. i did try to get it working with r5 but couldnt get it.. however i definatly wouldnt say its R5's fault as i am still learning linux. since then i just bought an IRman and it works perfect with r5Ax. im sure myself or more likely somebody will make it work at some point in the near'ish future.

It would help if you gave details instead of it doesn't work.

I have tried to set up a serial IR receiver (both COM1 and COM2) following the wiki instructions and the Mythtv documentation (http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-8.html). I have tried running irrecord to see if there is any detection and I get errors (cannot detect LIRC device).

I am just curious to know if anybody has gotten it working.

Thanks gr8nash - I did finally get it working and will update the wiki. The short version follows - following the wiki:

1. the symlink (linux) is fine - skip that

2. In the misc. setup section, edit /etc/modprobe.d/lirc to read alias char-major-61 lirc_serial and install lirc_dev /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install lirc_dev; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install lirc_serial

3. I also created an 'lirc' in modutils with one line - alias char-major-61 lirc_serial

4. update-modules

5. finish the misc. setup and reboot...
