Well first off, I'm really quite a newbie to linux...

I'm running an AMD Athlon system with a Hauppauge WinPVR-500. I followed the instructions from http://www.bitbenderforums.com/~ralpha6 ... mythtv.htm but with the latest release of knoppmyth, so I kind of combined the instructions with those on the pamphlet.

I have two hard drives (75GB) and at first I tried to install mythtv on debian on the hda but I failed miserably when it came to setting up the ivtv drivers. So then I went and followed the guide (link above) using only hdb (which was all free space at the time). I followed the instructions carefully and finally when it was all done, I booted up and mythtv came up fine. Then I hit Watch Live TV and I got the "unable to connect to master backend server... is it running," etc. message. (I also get the message when I go to machine status in the mythtv utilities, and some other places too).

In mythtv-setup I tried both 127.0.0.1 and a random IP address on my network - 192.168.1.13... nothing fixed it.

Next, I quit out of the mythtv frontend. I did a ps -a and didn't see any mythtv backend so I tried running it manually (as root): it starts up and gets to:
[date/time] Seem to be woken up by USER

then it just kind of stays there. So then I opened a new terminal window and tried to run the frontend at the same time:

mythtv: could not connect to socket
mythtv: connection refused
[date/time] Joystick disabled
[date/time] New DB connection, total: 2
[date/time] Connecting to backend server: 127.0.0.1:6543 (try 1 of 5)
Connection timed out.
You probably should modify the Master Server settings
in the setup program and set the proper IP address.
[date/time] Changing from None to None

At that point I couldn't start up the frontend again...

I basically have no idea at this point what's going on...

Can anyone please help me out?

Did you search the forum for that error message? The search link is at the top of every single page here. I know there are answers for this out there. Paste "unable to connect to master" into the top text entry box and remember to click the "Search for all terms" check box.

Perhaps checking the backend log....

Thanks for the replies - I think I've got everything working... it seemed that the problem involved networking. I tried to fix it manually but I ended up deciding just to wipe the computer clean and start with a fresh install.

Hehe, well it's certainly easier to get an answer catered to you personally; however, I must say that I spent many hours looking at many different forums to find an answer to my question but I didn't get anywhere. I guess from time to time, due to the myriad possible configurations of hardware and software, it can be hard to find the exact right solution - especially when you're a total n00b like me.
