Duh-oh! Turn on the Xv option under setup!

Under R5A15.1 there is a very slick script (/usr/local/bin/lirc-reconfig.sh) to reconfigure this for you with the answers to a few simple questions.

Not to mention that their insistence on having Firefox and Gedit and calling the Myth GUI "the desktop" seems to be a bit unclear on the concept...

This article does not do justice to KnoppMyth, if anything it does it a disservice.

If you look at the start of the second page he says and if in fact this is the case I don't believe he would have had half the trouble he mentioned.

And in closing on his last page he mentions about his wish list, half of which are already been done by KnoppMyth.

I find this article, from my perspective anyway, very high level and just breezes over the process of installation. It doesn't go into any detail on any aspect of the install or the product itself. Thus leaving users either confused (most likely) or dazed.

ExtremeTech is a Windows-fellating rag. I read it a couple times a week, no lie, just to have a good laugh. The limit of their view on Linux is like, "oh, no! I have to tweak a config file in a text editor!!!" I think Girkers is right - this article did KnoppMyth a disservice.

Since reading this article and another one that was just as crappy I decided to write my own. So far so good, it is a slow process buy seeing I don't have a dead line I would rather make it a quality document, rather than something that just breezes over this that and the other.

Let's say in some parallel universe, I was building KnoppMyth boxes for customers.. AGREE.. you don't need these things.

Although I wish there was a "real" web browser as part of the MythTV Package... OK, so it's hard to do real web browseing with a remote IR device... I'll let that go!

On the otherhand, I have just installed (i.e. apt-get install ..) synaptic, mozilla, and gedit on my KnoppMyth box. After the ceremonial "apt-get update" .. the apt-get on synaptic and mozilla was a breeze.. and they executed out of the xterm window just fine.. (that is, under user: root.) Then I ran synaptic to graphically install gedit.. ouch-ooch-ugh-hang. (this is where the gui install/update tool does badly) .. the install appeared to be hung.. well, likely, it was quitely doing it's config.. whilest I killed it. (not very graceful) As I restarted synaptic.. it instructed me to fix the problem with a "dpkg --configure -a" .. where, it picked up where I killed it, and displayed the activity to the xterm. .. still, on and on and on it ran. when it completed, it warned that the install had finished in an unholy mess.. but when I went into synaptic (yep, I'm still stuck on the GUI tool.. lesson not learned!) synaptic reported that it was goodly installed. So, what next.. give gedit a try in the xterm window.. and, yep, it works! In short.. I was surprised that the synaptic and mozilla install was smooth, yet the install of (seemly, as simple editor! .. maybe installing elvis-tiny would have a been better choice!!??) gedit was so "involved"..

Yep, I plead guilty of "abusing" the concept.

where proprietary PVR machines would go for thousands of dollars? (and my PC-based PVR would be as cheap as a used Apple II .. Sure, glad to pay royalties!
