I know this is probably obvious, but I optimized the mythconverg database. This appears to have given me a big performance boost and a dramatic reduction is disk space. By optimizing i mean cleaning the indexes and getting rid of the deleted fields, not re-normalizing the tables.

I did this using the command "myisamchk -r /path/to/mythconverg/*.MYI"

Before the command it would take 1-2 seconds to change entries in "browse mode" It is back to being almost instantanious. Also the database has gone from about 80MB to 37MB.

I performed a backup before issuing this command though. I was wondering if this command would be safe enough to script on a monthly or so basis?

Also, how would one defragment the filesystems in linux. and script this to happen periodically.

Thanks,

 Hope you stopped the servers before doing that! It's really NOT something you want to do with a databse that's in use. Doing it automatically has some potential pitfalls too. http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1043
