Hi,

I've not been able to change the bootsplash image in R5A22. I edited the /etc/bootsplash/themes/current/config/bootsplash-800x600.cfg file to point the jpeg and silentjpeg variables at my new 800x600 image, and then ran add_bootsplash.sh which seemed to do the right thing, modifying the initrd.gz file in some way and not throwing up any errors (response shown as follows)



However when I reboot the splash screen is the same as before. I can't figure out whether because there is already a splash screen image in the initrd.gz that it means you can't change it, or whether something else is going on that I don't understand.

lilo -v returns the following prior to the reboot but after running add_bootsplash



Is there some way to regenerate an initrd without a bootsplash image embedded and then run add_bootsplash to append the image I want? I've been looking at mkinitrd but can't really work out what I need to configure prior to running it, as it isn't installed by default with knoppmyth and consequently when installed it is in a default unconfigured state.

What exactly did you do to "point the silentjpeg variables" at the new image?

Probably "stabbing at straws here" but maybe the image you used isn't the right DPI.

There is a configuration file in /etc/bootsplash/themes/current/config/ called bootsplash-800x600.cfg which I believe (this may be where I am going wrong by the way) is used by the add_bootsplash.sh script to add the image to the initrd ram disk. Edit it as root to see the two files. One for silent. One for verbose and change as necessary. I don't think I have a problem with the image resolution. My image is 800x600.

I tried to create a new ramdisk without really knowing what I am doing and that partially worked. i.e.

got initrd-tools from apt to get mkinitrd
ran mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img /lib/modules/`uname -r` or something like that (did it yesterday can't quite remember what I did). That created a 3MB ramdisk, so I knew it wasn't right because the original ramdisk is something like 200kB, but I manually ran the command splash (which is what add_bootsplash.sh calls) and added the splash image to my new ramdisk. Added a lilo configuration for the new ramdisk (made sure to keep my old on), updated lilo and rebooted. On reboot, I chose my test configuration which lo and behold showed my new bootsplash image (yay!) and then froze because the ramdisk was wrong (thought that would happen). Anyway, I gave up, restored the lilo configuration back to original and let it be.

If someone knows either
1) How to delete all the bootplash images from an existing initrd or
2) How to recreate the initrd that knoppmyth uses (without having to unpack and recompile all the kernel source)

it would be much appreciated.

well DPI is different than resoultion but i doubt that is your problem anyway.

What image did you have in mind for the bootsplash anyway?
Perhaps we could start up a post for people to submit alternative bootsplash images... when we figure ou how to change it.
