Thanks for all the help everyone. I really do appreciate it. I'm sure I'll get there in the end.
I'm going away for the weekend so won't be able to try these things until Monday; I thought I should mention this as you've been so helpful and it seemed rude just to leave the thread hanging.

Paul, yes I can watch recordings from a windows machine. I thought our problems were different because your logs had 'waiting for free video buffers' and I didn't see this.

regards
Mark.

And just so I don't look rude for not replying, I'll be away until Tuesday.
:D

Did anybody get this fixed. ?

I have the same /similar problem. I had a 0.15 install, (which I took a Ghost image of thankfully). I was running with 0.15-lirc-xvmc evenm though I had changed my Nvidia card out for a matrox. all was well. I upgraded to 0.16-lirc and get the problems described. In my case I run the video in a window, and the window blue screens and crashes when used for livetv OR playback orf recordings. Recordings are fine.

Right, I'm back with renewed determination.

Search for a post by me on how to fix the GLX thing

I followed your lead here http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1871&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=libnvidiatls&start=30

I only have
Code:
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           25 Sep 26 23:46 libnvidia-tls.so.1 -> libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6111
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         2352 Sep 26 23:46 libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6111

in the lib directory. The tls directory is completely empty.
I just tried this again to make sure I've got everything right and I now get this in the errors log
Code:
mythfrontend: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1: file too short

and this as a directory listing
Code:
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           25 Sep 26 23:46 libnvidia-tls.so.1 -> libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6111
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root            0 Oct 11 22:41 libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6111

It looks like I must have deleted the file. Though I'm not sure how. I'll have to look at recovering this. Maybe re-install the nvidia drivers.

Your module settings are probably wrong. From what I've seen they can get very picky about the order they're loaded in, etc. Can you see the card in lspci or /proc/pci ? Are the modules loaded when you do an lsmod?

I'm not sure how to work this out. I'll get advice on this before replying.

Also, if you have /etc/modutils/bttv (or if the module load options are set elsewhere) this might be helpful.

As I'm able to record TV then

If the recording works, then the bttv modules shouldn't matter

Not knowingly. I have tried to install Riva drivers. But anything is possible as you can see from the missing file above!

Thanks to all for the help.

Download the NVidia dirvers bundle directly from here http://nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-6111.html again and run the installer as root. Be sure to tell it not to try to download precompiled drivers. If it whinges about overwriting a previous install force it. Then apply the fix from that posting. Check the install log it generates to make sure there are no errors.

Hello, I tried tjc's suggestion and re-installed the nVidia drivers. Unfortunatley this didn't fix the problem.
After installing I noticed that the 2 files were in the tjc directory so I did:
Code:
cd /usr/lib/tls
rm libnvidia-tls.so.1
ln -s /usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6111 libnvidia-tls.so.1

When I re-booted these file were no longer there. Is this correct?
Here's the install log

Did you do the fix AFTER reinstalling the nvidia drivers?

I think you've very seriously borked something on the sytem. This stuff should NOT be going away when you reboot.

Yes I'm certain I did
Code:
cd /usr/lib/tls
rm libnvidia-tls.so.1
ln -s /usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6111 libnvidia-tls.so.1

after downloading and installing the video drivers.

Maybe I should start again?
thanks again
Mark.

I managed to FIX my system.

I was getting the Black screen problem even if I used the "nv" driver for X instead of the "nvidia" driver.

I ended up search on google for "waiting for free video buffers timed out" and came across this post

Apparently it was something to do with loading the nvidia modules. In my /etc/modutils directory there were 3 files with the line "alias char-major-195 nvidia", so I commented out all 3 using the # character, and ran update-modules. After rebooting I was now able to watch recordings in X using the "nv" driver but not the "nvidia" driver (because I had disabled the loading of the module.)

I then reinstalled the Nvidia driver, which put back 1 of the entries in the modutils directory. Then the only other thing I did was copy tjc's XF86Config-4 file from here, which I needed to get twinview working so I could use my monitor, and now everything seems to be working.

Now this worked for me but I don't understand why so if any experts can work out the "true" cause and solution from this post could you please reply.

Thanks,

Crikey! That fixed it. I'd just about given up. Thank you! And thanks for all the other suggestions too.

Any further ideas on this? I just had a similar issue - box working fine last night, but when I came home from dinner I could hear constant disk thrashing. Odd, as I wasn't recording anything and I had left it sitting at a menu, so no live TV being cached either. I switched to watch TV and the screen was black. Only way I could stop the disk thrashing was by stopping the backend.

To cut a long story, I tried some of the stuff above but to no avail. Every time I went back to TV watching, just thrashing - no sound or picture, and no way to exit other than stopping backend. Just when I though all was lost it came good after a reboot (the last of many!) so I am still at a loss to explain what happened "all by itself" :!:
