I'm one of the unfortunate ones afflicted with the APIC/nForce2 lockup problems

It seems to me that updating to 2.6 almost seems like a better solution than recompiling. I could be wrong although the kernel upgrade procedure is well documented. I haven't attempted to patch mine yet because of the apparently high failure rate. I'm a Windows guy who's dabbled in Linux off and on for awhile. This isn't my first encounter with Linux but I'm still basically a n00b. That said I'm a bit apprehensive to attempt either.

My question is this,
Will updating my kernel cause any other problems with MythTV?

Also, does anyone even have a ballpark idea of when R5 will be released?
If that's gonna happen soon, I'll just wait and see if the APIC issue gets resolved in that release.

I'm so close to having everything working perfectly. My dual PVR-250's are working great, PiP, games, music, etc... I'm just down to the lockup problems and a few minor issues involving my USB devices.

This is my first post here but I've been lurking here for several weeks. Thanks, you guys have been a huge help.

I have no idea when R5 will be ready and yes doing anything to your kernel will break stuff. Not that it can't be fixed, but it will require you to recompile several different modules for the new kernel be it 2.4 or 2.6
