I've recently setup my XF86Config-4 with a 1080i modeline. This is working so far for my desktop, as well as MythFrontend. However, if I go to play a game through the emulator, the machine obviously changes to a different resolution, resulting in my HDTV receiving scramble garbage. Is there a way to set emulators, or the built in games (TuxRacer, Frozen Bubbles) to deal with the 1080i resolution and upscale themselves, or do I need to add things to my XF86Config-4?

Is there a certain resolution that these things like to run at? Does anyone have a suggested modeline for that?

Most games try to go to 800x600, 640x480 or one of the standard desktop modes when they go fullscreen. Some can be changed to go to a different resolution or not resize it, but few can handle weird display sizes like 1920x1080. Fceu is one that can handle an arbitrary resolution if you use that. http://www.htpcnews.com/main.php?id=atisettings has some of these modelines that can work well on a hd set. I've personally tried the 800x600 in 720p one only though. When you find a working modeline, add it to your available Modes in your Display subsection like so:

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "ATSC-720-59.94p" "800x600720p"

Then, when something tries to go to that resolution, that modeline will be used, and when it exits, it should switch back to your default mode. So far, I've gotten this to work reliably on zsnes, but haven't tried much else.

Modeline "1920x1080" 74.250 1920 1992 2040 2264 1080 1208 1218 1269 interlace +hsync +vsync

My TV says it'll take 480p, 720p, or 1080i through the components where my Myth is hooked up. I don't know if that means it won't accept a valid 640x480 or 800x600 signal.

I fixed my problem...

After a google search, I found this site, which posts modelines allowing a resolution inside another resolution.

http://www.tigerdave.com/pstrip_timings.htm

I ended up using a 640x480 resolution that is encapsulated in a 480p signal that my HDTV can understand. Here is my exact modeline, that is now allowing me to play TuxRacer and Frozen Bubbles...

Modeline "640x480" 26.964 640 704 768 856 480 486 492 525 -hsync -vsync
