I turned my system off after the overheat beeper started going, then when I went to turn it on it hangs after it says Lilo and the loads the 'Loading KnoppMyth' splash screen (no response to num lock, nothing).

Turns out the overheat was because the CPU fan had died, I've now replaced that but I'm still getting the hang.

If I boot from a live cd I can see the disk and read files etc, so I'm guessing the hard disk is ok and there must be a screwed config somewhere. I'm not sure why an overheat would have caused this - I shut down properly I didn't just panic and turn the box off. So I guess this problem and the overheat happening at the same time could just be coincidence.

Can anyone guide me though figuring out what the problem may be and solving it?

Can you <ESC> to see where in the boot process it is hanging?

nope, once the splash appears the keyboard is locked / system is frozen. Possibly I could press ESC when it's says LILO 2X.X.X on screen, but it zips past pretty quick; I'm at work at the mo but I'll give that a go when I get home.

I wouldn't mind just re-installing but, as is typical in a case like this, the last backup I took was a while ago (custom configs for usb drives etc). :(

pressing escape when it says lilo did nothing, num lock still reacts at that stage, but the moment the splash comes up, nada.

Hi,

Going thermal may have partially cooked the cpu.. If you have a different box available, hang the drive on it and see if it will boot. You can shut it down safely as soon as you see it is going to run by using the on/off button. The first stages are usually read only.

Actually I have built a drive on one box then moved it to another, A few things have to be re tweaked, but not impossible.

Yeah I'm going to try it in another system tonight.

The CPU should be fine because I took the downtime as an opportunity to upgrade so the box has a new CPU and new RAM; of course I've never had a PC overheat before so I don't know if a hot CPU can cause damage to the rest of the motherboard.

ok I put the disk in another box and the same thing happens, so definitely there's a config/data issue on the disk.

I'm all out of other ideas (google has not been my friend), so I think I'll have to reinstall.

If I back up /etc, /myth & mysql's data dir, will that be enough to set a fresh install to be the same?

Try, boot from the CD. When the menu comes up, quit.
Code:
mount -o rw /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1
chroot /mnt/hda1
cd /boot
cp initrd.gz.orig initrd.gz
lilo -v
exit
reboot

What happens? All you really need is MySQL's data dir. Then simply do a manual install and don't touch /myth.

I can't get chroot to play nice, whenever I try I get:
Code:
chroot: cannot run command '/bin/sh': Not a directory

look in /mnt/hda1, it would seem the bin is not a directory

Seems like something is wrong w/ your filesystem... A reinstallation maybe your best bet.

Good suggestion, but unfortunately I get the same error.

Cesman I think you're right it's gonna have to be a reinstall. Ah well, thanks anyway guys. Better download R5C7 so I can install tonight, might as well upgrade from B7 as I have to reinstall anyway. :)
