I was reading about the real-time patches and how they can help with performance, and since I noticed that while playing h264 files a few frames are dropped every few seconds, I thought I would try to apply the rt patch. Unfortunately the kernel will not compile with the rt patch, so I was wondering what other patches are applied to the knoppmyth kernel source?
I also tried on another box, but that did work either. In both cases I was using the debian kernel source, but I am not having any luck compiling a vanilla 2.6.19.1 kernel with the patch either.

The real-time patch can be found here; http://people.redhat.com/mingo/realtime-preempt/

Has anyone else tried this?

Duh! I should know better then tring to patch a kernel when I am falling asleep. :oops: Most of the rt patch is all ready in the main kernel except for a few options and all ready configured. I guess all I can do is recompile it for my P4, perhaps that might help a bit more then the generic 586.

This of course brings up the question of what optimations are best?
I see that "Use register arguments (REGPARM)" is not enabled, but it's description says;
Quote:
Compile the kernel with -mregparm=3. This instructs gcc to use
a more efficient function call ABI which passes the first three
arguments of a function call via registers, which results in denser
and faster code.

If this option is disabled, then the default ABI of passing
arguments via the stack is used.

If unsure, say Y.

I'll give it a try and see if these two changes help my playback.
