Hello! After my first successful KnoppMyth install (I'd hit quite a few bugs on the way), I'm having trouble getting sounds into my recordings, as well as hearing sound from anything. The second problem may be trivial, because I don't believe I have any recording that have sound with them, so I can't play anything back.
The first problem might be an issue with the way my TV tuner is connected to my computer. I ran a setup in Windows before where I had to connect the line-out of the tuner to the line-in on the motherboard and that seemed to work okay. I'm noticing now that there's onboard audio out as well (it's a Hauppauge PVR 150), but it's not connected, nor do I have a cable to connect it to the AUX in on the nForce 2 motherboard.
Do I have to connect the audio directly to the motherboard to get sound out of this card?
Is there any way I can test my sound card in KnoppMyth to be sure that it's working (and that I've got it connected properly)?
Thanks much for the help.
Here are my system specs:
Gigabyte nForce2Ultra400 GA-7NNXP motherboard
Hauppauge PVR 150 TV Tuner
AMD Athlon XP 3200+

The PVRx50 encodes the incoming sound in the stream, so there shouldn't be any issue with the output (encoded stream) side .
If you are capturing from the S-Video or composite input, the output of your source, should be connected to the Line In of the PVR150.
In your recording profiles (Utilities/Setup->Setup->TV Settings->Recording Profiles->MPEG2 Encoders), on the 4th screen of each profile, there is volume setting, check this to make sure.
Also in mythtv-setup check that your sound setup is OK, and the initial output volume levels are not too low.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to give this a try tomorrow.

Play some prerecorded music. Any .ogg or .mp3 should be enough to ell you that the sound card output is working or not... It's also not all that hard to find some prerecorded video samples to try.

I couldn't get any prerecorded sounds to play, and all the recording levels looked good in the settings.
I did notice that there was no screen with "MPEG-2 Encoders" in recording profiles, it had "Software Encoders (v4l based)", but not MPEG-2 Encoders. Could this be part of the problem? I've gotten live TV to work, but only without sound.
Thanks again!
Can I get some more step-by-step info on how to play prerecorded music? I got an mp3 file over to the computer, but I'm not sure how to play it in KnoppMyth. Thanks!

Actually, it appears that I don't have the same TV tuner I had mentioned, which would make sense with why I can't hear the sound. I have another in a box somewhere.. I'll give that a try and post back here.

That's strange, I'm pretty sure the PVR150 has the hardware MPEG encoder. In mythtv-setup, what is your card set up as?
For the sounds, if you copy the file into /myth/music and go into Utilities/Setup->Music Tools->Scan For New Music (it may scan automatically as soon as you go into Music Tools).
Then you can play using Media Library->Listen to Music. You will need to select item for your playlist using "3"

Actually, what I'm saying is that I think I actually have a Win-TV PVR or something like that instead of the PVR 150. I think the one I have really doesn't have the hardware decoder, so I'm going to get one in the next few days that does have a hardware decoder.
In the meantime, I was able to get the music to play with the steps you provided. Thanks for the tip. I'm looking forward to using KnoppMyth more, and you guys are great on the forums.

That card will work too. You just need to to hook up a jumper from the audio output on the capture card to one of the audio inputs (generally line-in or mic) on your sound card, and make some adjustments using alsamixer.
Oh, and also set it up as the right type in mythtv-setup...

Great! I realized that it was working, but I didn't have it quite set up right. After moving the cable from Line-in to Mic input, it started working! I wasn't going to try this, but I'm glad I did. I may end up upgrading the card later, but now I get to play with it some more. The sound is pretty good, even! Great.
Is there a document somewhere that would compare the advantages of software vs. hardware recording?
Thanks again, Bruce and tjc!

See the TVCard or PickingComponents pages on the wiki. Hardware encoders offload the encoding work from the CPU, automatically integrate your audio input (avoiding the one sound card per capture card requirement with multiple tuners) and produce MPEG2 output that makes it easier to archive to DVD. They also generally produce higher quality captures with less work.
BTW - You may want o go back and update the title of this thread to avoid confusion.
