Yesterday yielded more errors. With the PCI latency set lower in the BIOS the system recorded on both cards for quite some time. I started it recording on both cards around 1:00 PM. At 4:51 PM the ivtv driver tanked which stopped myth from recording on either card. I have a kernel crash dump, but I don't think it is very useful.
Code:

At this point I am going to switch back to two WinTV cards and set the system up so it can actually be used. When I get a spare PC on my work bench I may throw the PVR-250 card in it and play around some more.

Thanks again for all the help and suggestions while I fought with this card. It amazes me that I have almost identical hardware at home using a PVR-500 card without problems.

Thanks,
James

Here's my 2 cents from someone with a lot of experience with hardware problems. I've had lots of DDR400 memory over the past year that would pass memtest just fine and still cause problems like you are having. If you can overclock the memory about 5% try running memtest like that. Memtest is also able to change memory timings on the fly to see if that makes any difference. I was having the same random frontend crashes and hard locks with my KnoppMyth R5C7 box and it turned out that one of my three memory slots was bad. A lot of DDR 400 memory is supposed to run at 2.8V and the BIOS will many times autoset it at 2.6V or lower. I would update to the latest MB BIOS if you haven't already since many BIOS updates address memory compatibility issues and other things that may not be noted. The BIOS update may help also if it is a PCI timing issue. You may also want to try the cards in different slots so they don't share an IRQ with something else. The MB manual should tell you what slots share IRQs with what. Try turning off devices in the BIOS that you aren't using such as serial and parallel ports.

joelsplace: Thanks for the info. I will have to check and see if I can change the memory voltage. The BIOS has been updated to the latest. The memory in question is Crucial ValueRAM which tends to be of good quality.

I am pretty sure that the lockups I was experiencing were due to the PVR-250 card. Of course if I could get it working I would prefer it over the WinTV.

Thanks,
James

Crucial Ballistix DDR500 running at DDR400 is what I've been having the most trouble with. I've had to RMA a bunch of it. Worked fine for a few months and then started having trouble. I haven't tried any of their other RAM in a few years.

I've also had random lockups in the last 3 months running KM R5D1. I believe I'm running the same motherboard as the original post of this thread :!:

After reading through this thread, it looked like memory was a good place to start trying fixes.

I looked up the memory specs I bought for this KnoppMyth pc - 2 sticks of 512MB A-DATA DDR 400. The specs say it has a CAS Latency of 3. So, I went into the motherboard bios settings and set the CAS Latency from Auto to Manual and entered 3 in there. I've not had a random lock up since doing that a week ago.

Hopefully, I've hit it and this won't be a problem again!

Eric

Well, it locked up again yesterday. It ran for 2 weeks with no lockups after I changed the manual CAS latency settings to 3 in the motherboard BIOS. I really thought I had a fix.

I guess I'll try different sticks of RAM next and see if that fixes it.

Judging by the fact that numerous other people have seen these random lockups, could this be a bug in the particular Linux kernal version we are using?
I've not seen this kind of random lockup problem on any of my Windows manchines before.

After I fixed my memory problems R5C7 ran great for months. I upgraded to R5D1 + .20 and now the backend quits recording at random intervals. Sometimes it will run for a couple of weeks and quit but it isn't locked up. I reboot and all is well. ???? R5E50 is where I need to go now since my frontends aren't Knoppmyth and they all talk 31 instead of 30. Maybe that will fix my backend failures.

I started getting more frequent lockups in the last week, so I finally replaced the DDR sticks. I took out the ADATA memory and moved them to another machine. The lockups followed the ADATA memory!
For now, my KnoppMyth machine is free of random lockups.

Heres a hint. In a minimally installed system (i.e. starting to config it) i had a geforce 2 card in my pc and was getting these random front end/total crashes all over the place and was unable to get the pc to finish the basic setup without throwing a wobbly.

It drove me mad. I then swapped the card for a TNT2 and restarted the install from scratch. I dont get the crashes anymore, and now i also get the system to work more in the install. all i need to do now is figure out the stupid tuning thing.

onward & upward!!
