Bruce - Thanks for the assistance
Code: mythtv@fam_htpc:~$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log |grep nv (II) LoadModule: "nv" (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so (II) Module nv: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
So I do not have the nVidia driver installed. But I know there are many versions of nVidia driver. Which one should I be using with R5E50 and please advise me of the correct syntax to download and install it.
Thanks
robolo

Something must have happened during install as the nvidia driver should be installed for your card as this should be newer than one on my second box. Just to check (as root): Code: lspci -v <snippage> 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA]) Subsystem: XFX Pine Group Inc. Unknown device 1351 Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 248, IRQ 19 Memory at e4000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M] Memory at d8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M] [virtual] Expansion ROM at e5000000 [disabled] [size=128K] Capabilities: [60] Power Management version 2 Capabilities: [44] AGP version 3.0

Here is the relevent section of lspci -v
Code: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA]) Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 40, IRQ 11 Memory at 94000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M] Memory at c0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M] Memory at 92000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M] [virtual] Expansion ROM at d0000000 [disabled] [size=128K] Capabilities: [60] Power Management version 2 Capabilities: [44] AGP version 3.0
So it seems to be recognized. Don't know why the fresh install of R5E50 would not install the driver.

Right, as root run Code: install-nvidia-debian.sh 1.0-8776 That should install the driver.
BTW, does your motherboard have integrated graphics in addition to your card? This thread seems to suggest that having integrated graphics seems to interfere with the "proper" card detection.

Because I had problems with kernal source before when I tried to install nVidia driver I followed the advice at the top of:
http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=VMWareServer
regarding R5E50 kernal source/header install and build which went smoothly.
Next I followed your suggestion and got the long winded results below:
Code: root@fam_htpc:/usr/src# install-nvidia-debian.sh 1.0-8776 /usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-debian.sh: BEGIN strings: '/lib/modules/2.6.18-chw-13/nvidia/nvidia.ko': No such file dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove nvidia-glx-legacy which isn't installed. dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove nvidia-kernel-legacy-2.6.18-chw-13 which isn't installed. dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove nvidia-glx which isn't installed. dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove nvidia-kernel-2.6.18-chw-13 which isn't installed. dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove nvidia-glx-legacy which isn't installed. dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove nvidia-kernel-legacy-2.6.18-chw-13 which isn't installed. dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove nvidia-glx which isn't installed. dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove nvidia-kernel-2.6.18-chw-13 which isn't installed. After this completed, even though it ended with errors, I rebooted and now have Code: root@fam_htpc:~# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log |grep nv (II) LoadModule: "nvidia" (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o (II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
and in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file I now have Driver = "nVidia" instead of "nv"
The real test will come when I get home later to try to play a DVD and see if that has worked. I will let you know

SUCCESS!!
Yes, now I get (almost) smooth playback. Still seems to be skipping a few frames here and there but the main problems has been fixed. Thanks to Bruce and CeeNVee for all your help.

Just an update.
I had to reinstall KnoppMyth R5E50 again (don't ask) and followed Bruce's advice and it succeded without having to do the whole kernel install and compile thing. I still get those pesky -glx- error messages but the nVidia driver is sintalled now and seems to be working
Thanks again to Bruce and Ceenvee

You're welcome, and thanks for coming back to post your results, it's always nice to see people close the loop after a problem.

Well I got a chance to play a DVD finally and I will echo robolo's last problem of the Almost smooth DVD playback. It pauses every few seconds, a stutter so to speak. If I jump backwards in the movie it plays back fine up until the point I was at before, then begins stuttering again.
I have also noticed this behavior when playing back h.264 files, stuttering when playing back new parts of the file but if you skip back it plays fine, so it is not a DVD problem per say, nor an internal player problem as I am using mplayer for the video playback (h.264).
Any ideas?
Edit: In case this isn't robolo's problem, check this post: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13089
and verify you have DMA enabled on your dvd drive. I have checked, this is not my problem though...

Ok, so I redid my video mount as NFS instead of samba and the stuttering went away for the h.264 files. So maybe it is a data transfer or buffering problem. But I do have DMA on my dvd drive and the transfer rate is plenty fast. Is there a setting somewhere for how much data is buffered by the player? I am stumped so far...
