It looks like this is a problem with debian sid itself. I added
Code:
include /etc/modprobe.d
to /etc/modprobe.conf and /dev/dsp shows up on reboot.

Still waiting to see if this is a proper solution, but it fixed all my audio problems.

Do you know if it is possible to do this without rebooting? I'm currently switching to another console before starting up the frontend and making amendments.. trying to make it work. I have no HD installed except an I-RAM which won't work... and for now am avoiding installing an HD.

Audio works on my backend, but this problem occurs on any machine I've tried to use as a frontend - two different IBM notebooks and an a/open box.
