I don't know why my original post disappeared (probably because it could not be solved), but since I finally found a solution, I thought I'd post it here again in case others run into the same problem. My problem was that xine would freeze after upgrading.

I finally traced it back to the alsa driver. Rebuilding/reinstalling also did not work, so the solution was to use the oss driver instead:

1. xine -A oss

This should bring up the xine window without freezing. When it terminates the config file will be written, so I

2. edit .xine/config and check that you have the uncommented line
Quote:
audio.driver:oss

Now xine should start without the need of an extra parameter. I also wanted spdif passthrough, which for OSS required additional steps:

3. edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa and enter the line
Quote:
options snd-pcm-oss dsp_map=2

4. Now reload module snd_pcm_oss by typing
Quote:
rmmod snd_pcm_oss
modprobe snd_pcm_oss

5. Finally enable pass-through by editing .xine/config and uncommenting/changing the line
Quote:
audio.output.speaker_arrangement:Pass Through

Xine should be running now--if you had the same problem as I did, anyway ...

It disappears because you're not posting inthe proper forum, so the maintainer of this site deletes it. You problem is not about installation of Knoppmyth. It's about Xine. Try Knoppmyth:General or Knoppmyth:Hints & Tips. This forum is for Knoppmyth (The Linux Distribution) Installation issues ONLY.

What Mike said. Cecil really means it when he says "Posts that don't belong in installation will be deleted" and "Please read before posting".

It really sucks to have a posting you spent a bunch of time on deleted, but that's part of what makes it the only policy that seems to work for getting people to post in the right place.
