so, I ran apt-get install libxine1 on my backend by mistake (meant to run it on my frontend), but my system appears to be all messed up. It removed the simlink to mythweb from /var/www/ and when I recreated it mythweb.php also appears to be missing. I don't know what else is messed up. Is there any way to recover from this, or am I going to have to re-install Knoppmyth?

btw, I read around and thought that maybe I could just run install-i686, but the file wasn't in /usr/bin

Backup and auto upgrade. install-i686 has been gone for some time...

On a related note, if I want to upgrade xine-lib on my frontend is not the way to go?

Okay, apt-get install functions appeared to be all screwed up for me. I'm running R5D1, btw.

I just re-installed my system, and I wanted to be able to use VNC into my machine. I ran apt-get update, and then apt-get install x11vnc, following instructions I've followed before and have had no problems. This time, I ended up in the same boat as when I did an apt-get install libxine1...

Should I change my repositories if I'm running R5D1?

If memory serves you should be following this wiki page for R5D1: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=SwitchingToStableAPTRepository Pay particular attention to the bit at the end about "Using apt-get safely".

One of the main dangers with Debian based distros has always been that apt-get can be really dangerous if you're working with a heavily customized package set like KM and the repositories have moved substantially since the distro was assembled. The resulting dependency cascades can hose a system faster than you would believe. I beleive that the directions in that thread were meant for folks using R5E50, which being newer is much closer to the current repositories.

Well the latest debian release just caught me out too. I ended up with a whole flurry of dependencies for a package that I've installed a hundred times before without any issues. I still haven't hadd a chance to see if it hosed my system. If it did, I'll be reupgrading momentarily...
