I've just installed R5F27 and it's working great! However, whenever I select the "Optical Disks" menu, MythTV dies (goes back to the desktop with the penguin watching TV). Anybody else get this behaviour? Ideas where I should look? DVDs work great on the internal player, the menu comes up when I insert a disk.

Thanks

Sounds like a bad download/burn, which in turn eliminated or corrupted your /usr/share/mythtv/optical_menu.xml. Check the disk at bootup by selecting (from memory) Check CD, should be the first option on the menu.

An Auto-Upgrade with a good CD should get you going.

I checked out the optical_menu.xml, and it looked pretty normal, so did the main menu. I find it weird that the Optical Menu comes up when the DVD is inserted just fine. Is the Optical Menu called differently from the main menu than from when a DVD is inserted?

1) In the file .xsession-errors
Open an xterm (Alt-X), and type:
Code:
cat .xsession-errors

If that doesn't show any errors at the end, try

2) Running mythfrontend with verbose output.
In the same xterm, type:
Code:
mythfrontend -v all
and then go into the optical menu.

Paste any errors (i.e. the last 5-10 lines) of any output here.[/code]

I didn't look at the .xsessions-errors file, because X didn't crash at all, however the output from mythfrontend was very helpful. Here's the last line of the output:

Code:
2007-09-14 14:51:35.541 Error parsing: usr/share/mythtv///optical_menu.xml
at line: 144  column: 25 msg: unexpected character

Sooooo,

Line 144 was:
Code:
 <actionEXEC eject /dev/hdc</action>

I had modified this file so the eject would work, forgot to put a ">" between action and EXEC. My bad. Thanks to both of you for replying!

Hi,

You left this little tid-bit out in the beginnng....
Quote:
I had modified this file so the eject would work,
which tended to lead folks down the wrong path because they did not know it was a non standard situation.

The folks here on the forum are the most helpful & thoughtful group you may have the good fortune to run into for a long time, but it is very frustrating for them to offer help when there are important details omitted.

Also many times a lack of details for hardware makes them have to play the game of 64 questions, just to help you, the poster.

Thanks
Mike

Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for your input.
