When attempting to navigate the program guide with either the remote or the keyboard, the direction keys (arrows) stop moving the selection after 1 or 2 moves. After the selection box can no longer be moved, the only key that works is ESC (or back/exit on the remote), which allows me to exit the guide. Once out of the guide, the remote functions normally - I can navigate the menus wothout any problems. I have Knoppmyth R4V5 installed on 2 machines - simialar hardware, and only one of the machines has this issue.

Machine one Specs - This one has the issue
AMD Athlon XP 1700+
NVidia based vid card for TV out
512MB RAM
2 HD's - 20GB & 80GB (80GB drive using LVM for additional space in /myth)
Hauppauge PVR-250 (grey remote)
Knoppmyth R4V5 - comination backend/frontend

Machine two Specs - This one does not have the issue
Intel P3 1.2Ghz
NVidia GeForce Ti 4200 for TV out
512MB RAM
120GB HD
Hauppauge PVR-250 (silver remote)
Knoppmyth R4V5 - comination backend/frontend

Other than changing the /etc/lircd.conf & /home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc files for the differences between the silver & grey remotes, the software on the systems is the same.

Has anyone else experienced this problem, or does anyone have any ideas for a possible solution?

Thanks -

Allan

thats a known issue.. and all i can say it.. "sucks dont it" =( i heard rumors its related to xine taking focus. I would be curious to know if you use xine on your system? also.. why use r4v5?? i havnt seen this issue in in my r5 system.

Yes, I am using Xine - on both systems - same software configuration.

I used R4V5 mainly for 2 reasons. First, my family - I wanted to be as sure as I could that the installation would be as stable as possible, and I thought (after doing some research on this forum & the knoppmythwiki) that R4V5 would be more stable than R5A9 (which I believe was the latest alpha release at the time). The other reason, why I chose to continue to use R4V5 on the second box was simply to maintain both systems as identical (software wise) as possible. Perhaps I should consider upgrading both of them to R5A12.

You said this is a known issue - I assume that means that there are no known workarounds? I have read several post regarding Xine and a loss of focus - but this happens only in the prgram guide - not while Xine is running, and I don't believe that focus is truly lost - the ESC key (and/or the back/exit key on the remote) still work. I have tried several search word combinations hoping to find a similar problem (and possibly a solution) with no luck. Do you have any idea where I might find any information on this problem?

Also, thanks for your response.

Allan

yeah honestly the xine/lost focus idea never made much sense to me.. but it came from a very knowlageble person so i just took it at face value. i never found a solution. I would DEFINATLY use A12 over R4v5. If i see anything ill let you know but honestly this *MIGHT* be a old problem, as i havnt seen it in the newer versions of myth/knoppmyth/xine. I would start by upgradeing everything to be up2date.

You're probably right - maybe I'll get time this weekend to upgrade one of the boxes to R5A12 - it seems like most people find it pretty stable.

The current WAF (Wife and Family) acceptance factor is very good - it's a tough decision to update to an alpha, even though it is reported stable. But, without knowing when R5V1 will come out, maybe that is the best way to go.

Thanks again -

Allan

Per the title, this is happening on a fresh R5A15.1 install.

It happens after running xine (to play a DVD).
The only workaround I have so far is to ensure another
window (say, xterm), the alt-tab to the xterm and alt-tab back
to myth. Which, of course, doesn't work if you
are trying to use a rmeote only.

Have found someone who said that switching window managers fixed the problem.

I'd use twm if I could switch off that 'please place window' feature.
I can't install any others - I get errors from apt-get.

Let me take that back - I did have apt-get working (doh).
Installed XFCE - and I still have the problem.
The issue becomes clearer with that WM - when Xine runs,
mythfrontend (MFE) puts itself to the back. You can see the
WM toolbar popup in front of MFE, then xine starts.
When Xine quits, MFE is still behind the WM toolbar.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
I am using 5A15.1

Cheers.
Paul.

I stopped having focus problems with xine after I switched to the ratpoison window manager. I don't know what is magic about ratpoison but it works. It isn't your typical window manager though, but it seems fine for Myth.

BTW, I originally discovered this from the MythTV wiki.

I went with an xterm workaround for this problem myself.

xterm -e -pfhq --no-splash dvd://

you get a brief second where you see an xterm window before the movie starts... but the focus issue is completely gone now.

Thanks to all for the replies. I'll give the "launch an xterm" method a shot. Right now, I've got an xterm open in the background, and do a couple 'alt-tab's after watching a DVD, which also works. Remembering is a pian - the automated way would be much nicer.

A question about the command "xterm -e -pfhq --no-splash dvd:// ". Doesn't xine need to be in there somewher? Possiby "xterm | xine -e -pfhq --no-splash dvd://" ?

Thanks again -

Allan

Actually it's probably more like:
Code:
xterm -e xine -pfhq --no-splash dvd://

Telling xterm to execute (-e) the program (xine) with the given arguments (-pfhq --no-splash dvd:// ). Run "man xterm" for other details...

Thanks to rogabean & tjc. It's been a while since I posted this, and have since changed a lot of things around. I have a master / slave setup now, both R5A15.1 (it's been a few weeks now - since before A16 was out). Both boxes are set to use Xine, and they both had this same problem. Changing the command to the 'xterm -e' style has eliminated the problem. Thanks again.

Looks like there's an unofficial patch as described on the mythtv users
mailing list to xine-ui-0.99 to fix the problem.

It removes the section of code that sets the focus to the root window upon exit.

See the thread here:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/103676?search_string=xine%20patch;#103676

Another script, "clickinscreen" was a modified version of the above script, written by
a forum member on mythtvtalk.com. It clicks in the MythTV window, at location 100,100 .
It may not work if you're running Myth in a window (as opposed to full-screen mode).

Awesome. My wife has been complaining about this one since I switched dvd playback to xine for menu support. Putting xterm -e in front of the xine worked like a charm. Thanks. :)
