I was running an older version of knoppmyth & grabbed and upgraded to the latest because of the listing service change.

I followed the directions through twice, but every time I run mythfilldatabase,it still tries to get the data from zap2it.

i ran through this exact same problem. it's probably not an issue with xmltv, but with installing the latest fixes version of mythtv. the new xmltv supposedly works BOTH with the old zap2it (datadirect) and the new SchedulesDirect. only the newest version of mythtv can see SchedulesDirect, though (if you have the old version, you'll still see DataDirect in mythtv-setup).

i did the install exactly as cecil instructs on the first page (twice), but it didn't work for some reason. my guess is that it didn't compile correctly (as the make install didn't kick out any errors). eventually, i tried the instructions at http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CompileMythTVFromSVN and it all started to work.

I did all of the stuff in this thread and it all worked great. Thanks.

I also noticed that mythstream is complaining about being compiled with the wrong version of MythTV. I can't find a description of how to re-compile mythstream. Any pointers?

Thanks in advance.

I never thought I would say this, but I am starting to miss my piece of crap tivo.

I followed the link, watched at every step to make sure everything completed.

and the front end still crashes.

also, when I add my capture card, it doesn't take, never shows up in the list.

also, when I add the tv source back in, it doesn't save.

and at that, it still doesn't appear as schedule direct. it looks like the install is crapping out somwhere in the process.

as soon as I run make install on the fixed version, it loads a screen saying that it can't communicate with the database, it has 2 or 3 setup screens, i click finish on those, and it's right back to the desktop.

2 days is too long to spend on this.

What version of Knoppmyth were you running before you started the upgrade?

I think it was r3d1 or r4d1.

It was rock solid for as long as I can remember, so I never messed with it after the initial installation.

I started over yet again with R5F1 / Auto Install.

I figured I would try to get it stable before attempting an upgrade,
but that isn't panning out.

When I stop the backend and run mythtv-setup, it hangs for a while, then exits and reloads the front end without notice, which promptly crashes back to the desktop.

I am far from an expert with knoppmyth so if someone has a better idea please chime in.

I'm guessing that you had R5D1 since to the best of my knowledge all the R4's were R4Vsomething. Did you blow away everything during the R5F1 auto install? Erase the myth partition (erase all of hda)?

If you did (be very careful when you answer this question, if you did then your old recordings are gone, if you didn't then you still have them but if you do an auto install you will lose them when the /myth partition is formated) and cannot get R5F1 to work then I would go back to R5D1 ftp://ftp.knoppmyth.net/R5/R5D1/ and auto install that since you know that worked on your system (you will have to do any customizations that you did when you first installed). Then follow the instructions here http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... grade+r5d1 to upgrade to R5E50 and follow the instruction on page one of this thread to get Schedules Direct working.

Again I am NOT an expert with Knoppmyth so I tend to fall back to what worked and move forward from there in small steps, it is what has worked for me for several years. I also like to use dd to create an image of my hda1 before any upgrade so I can restore quick and easy.

If this does not help then might I suggest starting a new thread in installation rather than change the direction of this one any more than we already have.

Try the following:

1. Halt the backend (ALT-2)

2. Create an X-term (ALT-X)

3. In the xterm type "mythtv-setup" (no quotes)

Of course, you will still get the crash, but now look in the x-term to see if there are any useful diagnostic message. copy-and-paste them into a post on this thread and we'll see if we can help you figure out what is going on.

It is also worth looking in the log files /var/log/kern.log and /var/log/messages for an interesting error messages.

I encountered a strange problem when doing the ad-hoc upgrade. Channels above 13 and up to 99 are shown on the listing & they have schedules, but they are not viewable on Myth (I get snow).

When checking the MythWeb channels setting, the freqid is the same as the channel number for those channels. (By comparison, the numbers for channels 1 through 13 is a six-digit number.

For example:
Channel 13 : FreqID 211250 (main screen turn on, we get signal)
Channel 15 : FreqID 15 (main screen turn on, we get snow)

I just updated with Cecil's instructions and it went great! No major issues, and with R5F1, it took about 45 minutes. And fortunately, most of my 'tweaks' were unaffected by the upgrade (yay!).

The only issue I've seen so far is that MythStream broke after the upgrade. I get the following error (similar to above) on the frontend:

Quote:
The mythstream plugin was compiled against libmyth version: 0.20.20060828-4, but the installed libmyth is at version: 0.20.20070821-1. You probably want to recompile the mythstream plugin after doing a make distclean

So I went to the MythStream homepage and downloaded mythstream-v0.17_2.tar.gz
after a 'tar xvf mythstream-v0.17_2.tar.gz', I followed the instructions in the INSTALL file, and its no longer broken.

Thanks for the great directions Cecil!

I just want to note one other issue that I had doing this manual fix on my R5D1 system:

The frontends (a local and remote) are losing connection to the backend server every night at some point. It is strange, as the backend is still running and everything. However, I cannot escape off the message. I have tried the babysit backend script and it does nothing- because the backend is never halting. It more of a nuisance, as I can reboot the systems and have it run for the next 24 hours or so.

I am sure the best solution will be a full upgrade to R5FX at some point. I have never tried upgrading to R5F1 but I had problems with R5E on my system and reverted back to R5D1 last year.

Again, this is one heck of a project and I love the fact I have always been able to troubleshoot things via this great forum. I am just making notes in case anyone else wants to do the R5D1 manual fix.

That can happen if you have the tuner configured to use off the air signals when you're actually using analog cable. Go back into mythtv-setup, the the "general" section, and make sure that you're configured for the right type of reception. You may also want to try dropping and re-creating all of your cards if the former doesn't solve it.

EDIT: this is R5F1 (latest).

OK, I moved the hard drive into a better machine with RAM and a good CPU and stuff, and this time the instructions worked (the build didn't fail) I think it was just too short on RAM before.

Anyway, now all the setup works as expected, the channels populate from my SD account, and mythfilldatabase appears to be pulling data, but the data doesn't make it into my listings. I deleted and recreated the program source and all, as indicated. The backend and frontend are working, the database is up (at least I can see my previously recorded programs, and I can see all my channels in the program guide) but every channel just says "Unknown". I've deleted and re-added my source 3 or 4 times now, same thing.

There's an error in the mythfilldatabase run, see below (UpdateProgramViewTable no dd_state). Any ideas? (I only ran this for 1 day's data but the same thing happens for 14 days)

Code:
(lines clipped out for brevity)
2007-09-08 21:08:53.890 Grab complete.  Actual data from Sat Sep 8 04:00:00 2007 to Sun Sep 9 04:00:00 2007 (UTC)
2007-09-08 21:08:53.891 Main temp tables populated.
2007-09-08 21:08:53.891 Updating myth channels.
2007-09-08 21:08:53.914 Updating icons for sourceid: 1
2007-09-08 21:08:53.914 Channels updated.
2007-09-08 21:08:53.915 DataDirect, Error: UpdateProgramViewTable no dd_state!
2007-09-08 21:08:53.915 Did not find any new program data.
(etc, etc)
