My interfaces file looks like this, but should contain info on my wireless card (ath0) card - I'm sure it used to...
Quote:
# /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)

# The loopback interface
# automatically added when upgrading
auto lo ath0 ath0 ath0 wifi0
iface lo inet loopback

iface wifi0 inet static
address 192.168.0.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.0.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.0.254

I would make a copy of the interfaces file for a backup, then edit the interfaces file and remove the duplicate entries for ath0.

Is your WiFi working? If so, remove all the ath0 entries from the "auto lo ath0 ath0 ath0 wifi0" line. It doesn't appear to be configured in here...

OK, your lo interface is either not up, or misconfigured. Try
Code:
ifup lo
after editing your interfaces file.

Does that complain? If not, try ifconfig again, this time you should see 127.0.0.1 assigned to lo.

If that still doesn't get 127.0.0.1 assigned to lo, try
Code:
ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 up

my /etc/hosts fie looks like this:

127.0.0.1 mythtv localhost

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts

fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

Yep, that looks good.

slowtolearn - You sir, are a STAR!!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot to everyone helping me track this down. It's all working again.
The wifi references in my /interfaces could be why my ath0 card isn't connecting on boot up. Have to sort that next.

Well, thanks, just trying to help out. I've been very lucky in receiving help here when I asked for it.

So what was the culprit? Someone else may be in the same boat someday, would like to get the solution included here...

It was, as you suggested the lo interface not being up. Cured by
Code:
ifup lo

How exactly I managed to set it down, I'm not sure.

My wireless adapter is ath0. What wifi0 is doing I've no idea.

Well, I'm glad you got it sorted out. I'm afraid I have very little experience with wireless (in Linux, Windoze or other) so I can't help you with the ath0/wifi0 problem, sorry.

On reboot, 'lo' wasn't brought back up.
I tried ifconfig lo up and this failed with a message saying that /etc/network/interfaces could not be read. Using ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 up I was able to bring up lo.
Any ideas why this is?

Actually, on another reboot it was ok. Saying that though, it appears there is some diffiiculty reading the /etc/network/interfaces file at times.

Thanks that fixed me too. I lost "lo" or localhost after using netcardcfg.sh to setup a static IP. I have to readdd lo at every boot using webmin, but now I can add "iface lo inet loopback" to my boot processes.

Symptoms were, could not ping localhost, 127.0.01, hostname nor IP of mythhost. I could ping yahoo.com and my gateway. Other PCs could ping mythbox.

Mythweb did not work with mythconverg type of data, but I could get online manuals and other web pages not tied to myth database.

Mythbox would freeze, backend would not stay up, frontend would not display after boot. It was a real mess because nothing backend related would route and therefore forever wait.
