Just for fun I took a couple of days and tried mythbuntu also. I agree with jmckeown2's post. However, other than the "window" gui I didn't see much difference in the flow or look of the installer sequence.
I tried to restore my mythconverg backup (the old fashioned mysql command way) and hosed the whole thing. (shouldn't mythconverg be the same?). Next I did clean install and couldn't believe they put everything on one partition. They have a nice gui configuration screen, but most of it doesnt work as advertised and you still had to hand edit config files, etc, even after using this.
After a lot of searching the forums and editing config files, I was able to get my hauppauge grey remote to work. (it's old enough should be easy right?) And after a second day still couldn't get my irblaster (generic home-brew) to work at all. Even after compiling LIRC from scratch! (I used to this many times for an older irblaster). Lots of unanswered forum posts with my same irblaster problem.
Weekend was coming to an end and I needed to get my box back to start recording my shows. 40 minutes later I had my knoppmyth exactly where I left it, including restore, etc.

My Mythbuntu 8.04.1 slave backend has been working flawlessly for the past few months. I have also been keeping it up to date with the update manager. I would not, however, use Mythtbuntu as a master backend since there is a lot of features that Knoppmyth R5.5 sets up automatically.

My brother in law prefers Mythbuntu since it has a lot of GUI tools for setting up NFS, Samba, Remotes, etc.

In regards to this, in particular SAMBA and NFS you could always show him Webmin, which could be considered a GUI for these options. There is also so much more in Webmin that may satisfy his requirements.

We are posting in the KM forum, so have to all admit bias. My biased conclusion was that while Mythbuntu, especially the installation appears more complete, this is merely an illusion and KM is actually the more complete distro. The text-mode installer inspires fear, and keeps people away. Even "unbiased" reviewers have been sucked into the logical fallacy that KM's installer is "primitive" because of text-mode.

Two additional points.
1. We've been told that the next release will have a new "GUI" installer which should kill the text-mode argument once and for all.

2. Mythbuntu, KnoppMyth, or even Mythdora; ultimately what people use as long as the Myth market-share grows. We all need to be spreading the word that DRM-free DVR's are possible and viable.

I've got some advice for anyone thinking of trying mythbuntu with a hauppauge card - stick to 8.04 and avoid the latest, 8.10 intrepid. I had to compile the hauppauge drivers to get a pvr 500 working with 8.10 that worked well with 8.04.

As for the argument about particular distros, sometimes it's horses for courses. I've now used KnoppMyth, MythBuntu, and MythDora on different machines. If you have trouble with a distro on one machine, another distro might not have the same problem. I was setting up a mythbox for someone on a motherboard that locked up on startup half the time with both KnoppMyth and MythBuntu. I'd just about given up on this motherboard when I decided to try MythDora. I was able to restart that installation repeatedly with no lockups.
