No, there is no unpatched version of the kernel. I always start w/ vanilla and add patches as needed. Your best bet in getting the 3000 working is probably vanilla 2.6.9 w/ V4L2 updates.

Well, I managed to get and build 2.6.9, after patching it with the 2.6.6 V4L2 patches.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that a simple "make modules_install && make install" and then the appropriate lilo.conf tweaking ended with the system simply going to a blank screen shortly after lilo started loading the kernel.

I'm now officially brain-fried (I spent a good portion of the workday doing FreeBSD installation/configuration), so I think I'm going to pack it in for now.

I've left the box in that state, on the off chance that it may actually continue booting after some unknown timeout, but I doubt it.

The keyboard's still responsive (no blinking indicators, capslock/numlock responding appropriately), but all other indications are that the box is frozen. No disk activity, no network activity.

Either I'm completely vaporlocked, or more things have changed about Linux between 2.4 and 2.6 than I was aware of.

Just a brief (non-)update: I gave up on KnoppMyth, hoping that someone else can get it up and running with a 3000. I managed to get MythTV working on FC3, but not with the 3000. I'm able to use mplayer to watch HD on the 3000, but not MythTV.

I've put that project on hold until KnoppMyth works. I've got a feeling that if I wait long enough, someone else will get it up and running. Unfortunately, I've just started a new job and don't have the time to devote to this at the moment.

FC3? No way. It's KnoppMyth for me. Others have reported success under Debian, so there's no reason Knoppix won't work.

I've cleaned off an old SMP server I have -- it's got a Tyan Tiger S2644 motherboard and two Athlon MP 2000 processors. One gig of RAM and an indeterminent amount of disk space (depending on what sales Fry's has over the next couple of weeks). I'm putting two HD-3000 cards in this box and making it a backend system.

At first I thought of making it the primary backend, but cesman mentioned it would be easier to set it up as a secondary. I now agree. I'd like to keep my current front/backend system running on its HD-2000 card without changes, so I'll keep it the master and make this new one slave.

I'm going to play around with it under R4V5. I'll enable the kernel for SMP and see what I need to add for HD-3000 support. I don't know if a 2.4 kernel will work with the HD-3000, but I'm going to try it first. If I need to update the kernel I will, but I'll try to stay as "stock" as possible.

I hope you do update the kernel and get it working because I have had no luck upgrading the kernel from r4v3. If you do, could you please post details of what steps you took to go from standard install to new kernel. The DVB howto says the following as one of its steps:
Quote:
Change /proc/ksyms to /proc/kallsyms in these files:
/etc/init.d/modutils
/etc/init.d/nfs-common

which i dont really understand.
Shouldnt installing the module-init-tools fix any problems like this if they are required?

I have downloaded r4v5 at work and will try it at home when I buy another hard disk. It'll take a few days to get it home because the data rate between home and work is only 256 megabytes per day (the capacity of my memory stick).

I currently have my DVB card working on FC2 which makes me feel unclean. The sooner someone either posts a kernel upgrade howto that i can follow (or R5 is released  ) and I can move back to Knoppmyth the better.
