I tried it with R5B7 (upgraded from R5A22)

At first it seemed to work but unfortunately it aborded the process.
But may be only on my system cause a module is on the blacklist.
(my nvidia graphics card)

seems like the very latest driver added support for suspend to ram or sleep or hibernate or something like this that might be relevant here. There is a thread on how to install it. The standard scripts no longer work since nvidia deprecated our install method.

Unfortunately my graphic card is no longer supported from this driver so I have to use the old one. Bye Bye suspend-mode ;-(

NVRM: The NVIDIA Vanta/Vanta LT GPU installed in this system is
NVRM: supported through the NVIDIA Legacy drivers. Please
NVRM: visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html for more
NVRM: information. The 1.0-8756 NVIDIA driver will ignore
NVRM: this GPU. Continuing probe...
NVRM: No NVIDIA graphics adapter found!

:lol: That was a good one. Yes it's a Riva TNT2 good recognized. But it's not much older than the rest of my system. But thanks to my PVR-350 it works fine, excepts the suspend.

well if you are using the pvr350 for tvout as well It might be worth looking to see if the nv drivers support software suspend. since you don't need the tvout which is pretty much all you gain with the official nvidia drivers on a card that old anyways.

No I'm looking tv over my beamer, which doesn't support tv in.
When my exams are finished I'm going to write a script, which inits runlevel 3 unload the nvidia module and hibernate. After poweroff/poweron it should loads the nvidia module and returns to runlevel 5. Shouldn't be too hard to implement.

well no it shouldn't bee all that difficult, though remember knoppmyth uses runlevel3 as default, and 3 and 5 are identical, so you will have to make some changes to make runlevel 5 graphical and runlevel3 nongraphical. Debian has never honored the 3=gui 5=cli that the RPM distributions do.

and by the way what is a "beamer"?

Thx for the information. This will make it a bit more difficult but I should figure out how to do it.

Sorry I used the german word, thought it's the same in english. It's a video/lcd projector.
In other words a 90 inch display :-)

Hi,

Many thanks for the hibernation support in R5B7 and the instructions and hints in this thread! I've so far managed to get my system to hibernate successfully. :) By some reason I had to bring down Lirc before i could get it to hibernate OK and not just end up with "Freezing processes failed. Wacky driver problems". Here is a little script I made for that purpose:
cat down.sh
killall lircd
rmmod lirc_i2c
rmmod lirc_dev
hibernate
However, when resuming or just booting it now hangs during the boot process!
Here is my dmesg:
Suspend2 Core.
Suspend2 Compression Driver loading.
Suspend2 Encryption Driver loading.
Suspend2 Swap Writer loading.
Suspend2 FileWriter loading.
ACPI wakeup devices:
PCI0 USB0 USB1 USB2 USB3 USB4 USB5 USB6 LAN0 AC97 MC97 UAR1
ACPI: (supports S0 S1 S3 S4 S5)
md: Autodetecting RAID arrays.
md: autorun ...
md: ... autorun DONE.
RAMDISK: cramfs filesystem found at block 0
RAMDISK: Loading 4584 KiB [1 disk] into ram disk... done.
XFS: bad magic number
XFS: SB validate failed
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3.1)
And here it hangs.

mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.gz did generate a quite big image for me (4694016 bytes), so I had to change the ramdisk size from 4096K to test it (by pressing shift during boot and entering "Linux ramdisk=8192" at the lilo prompt). I then managed to get a much smaller image that fitted in the standard 4096K ramdisk by changing "MODULES=most" to "MODULES=dep" in /etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf. Same result thoug! :(

Any suggestions?

Kind regards
Björn

Hi,

I found one clue! It seems as if mkinitrd fails to compress the image correctly:
root@mythtv:~# gunzip /boot/initrd.gz
gunzip: /boot/initrd.gz: not in gzip format
This would also explain the large file.

I could find no way in mkinitrd.conf to change the output format. Nor could I find any config file for mkcramfs.

Here is my mkinitrd.conf:
root@mythtv:~# cat /etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf
# /etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf:
# Configuration file for mkinitrd(8). See mkinitrd.conf(5).
#
# This file is meant to be parsed as a shell script.

# What modules to install.
#MODULES=dep
MODULES=most

# The length (in seconds) of the startup delay during which linuxrc may be
# interrupted.
DELAY=0

# If this is set to probe mkinitrd will try to figure out what's needed to
# mount the root file system. This is equivalent to the old PROBE=on setting.
ROOT=probe

# This controls the permission of the resulting initrd image.
UMASK=022

# Command to generate the initrd image.
MKIMAGE='mkcramfs %s %s > /dev/null'

# Set this to yes if you want to use busybox(1).
BUSYBOX=no

# Set this to no if you want to disable /usr/share/initrd-tools/scripts.
PKGSCRIPTS=yes

# This is the value for LD_LIBRARY_PATH when deciding what goes onto the
# image.
INITRD_LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

# Hardcode partition to resume from so it doesn't have to be specified
# on the command line. The command line will override this setting.
# RESUME=
Any ideas?

Kind regards
Björn
