Thanks again thomas, you were 100% right; all I needed was the firmware from the Windows installation package. Now I can tune stations and get dvbstream to pipe data to mplayer. Unfortunately mplayer throws an error saying my PC is too slow (dual celeron 400's) to process the DVB stream.
I have a Hollywood Plus decoder card that I believe is supported by the mplayer software. It's time for another google search to find linux drivers and instructions on installing them.
Hopefully once I get this working with mplayer it will be simple to get it working in MythTV. Does anyone know if MythTV supports hardware decoding of the video steam by the DXR3/H+?
Thanks for all your help.

I have had the same problem at first, too. It turned out to be just a problem with my antenna. It received a good signal for some stations but a bad one for others (using DVB-T). And MythTV (or the Linux drivers?) is somewhat sensible to that.
Did you try and switch channels in the card setup section of mythtvsetup and look at the signal strength?

My Linux box is equipped with an AMD 700MHz CPU. This is just working well. I sometimes get problems if mythfilldatabase is grabbing while using the frontend. So I guess this is close to the minimum for DVB-T.
I am in the process of chosing a nice barebone to get MythTV into my living room. The old box won't be alowed in the living room by my wife (for good reason) and is just a "proof of concept" for me.

just a quick question.
I have 0.14 working no problems with my Visionplus DVB card. Now if I want to upgrade to 0.15.1 can i just download the myth-0.15.1.tar.bz2 and follow the instructions from the 1st post and install over the top of my old mythtv making the changes to settings.pro file.
I relise I will have to make the changes to the mysql ie. change the password back.
Is there anything else I need to do or is there a way I can use the debs with a DVB card installed?

I haven't tried upgrading a working 0.14 DVB setup to 0.15, but I have run the 0.15.1 setup program against a 0.14 backend, and it did upgrade the database schema.
I think what yuou suggest should work - my advice would be to just try it!

jbman,
Been through this loop.
From memory I think that your suggestion is the best thing to do is;
Backup mythtv, always a good plan.
and then go through the original instructions from step 5.
I am sitting now at a 0.14 (dvb) to 0.15 upgrade, and it works fine.

How do I create a custom file with local settings for the Nimiq1 satellite (91 Degrees West-Expressview) and how do I load the cam?

Thanks nigel for the great guide.
I have the system setup with 0.16 now, but I still don't get great reception. I've tried the card under Windows and it works fine there. Some of the messages I've read indicate that an upgrade to the 2.6 kernel should work.
So, I tried downloading the kernel image via apt-get and downloading source and building it using the old config file as a reference (I've been building kernels since Linux came on floppies).
Unfortunately, I'm also getting a blank screen when the 2.6 kernel tries to boot (like snowboardjon). I've tried setting "video=vga16:off" to try and stop it from using a frame buffer. Any other ideas on what I could try to get this kernel to boot?

When does the screen blank. After LILO starts executing the kernel? After the kernel memory stuff? When it tries to initialise the console?
What graphics chipset?
Have you tried changing the video resolution in LILO instead of as a kernel arg? (e.g. vga=0x780)

nigelpearson wrote: When does the screen blank. After LILO starts executing the kernel? After the kernel memory stuff? When it tries to initialise the console? It would go blank when it tries to go into framebuffer mode for the bootup messages (after lilo begins executing the kernel). I ended up changing the "vga=" line in lilo.conf to another value. Then it would ask me to specify a mode, and when I selected 80x25 it worked ok. nigelpearson wrote: What graphics chipset? NVidia Geforce MX440. It's a nforce2 motherboard with built in video, tv out, ac97, digital out, etc. nigelpearson wrote: Have you tried changing the video resolution in LILO instead of as a kernel arg? (e.g. vga=0x780) Yep, that's what fixed it.
I eventually got the DVB stuff working on 2.6. But it was a waste of time. The twinhan card works just as poorly under 2.6, but mythtv becomes totally flaky. I'm getting close to the point where I'm going to reformat and start again. I've lost track of all the things I did while trying to get mythtv working under 2.6.

Hello there everyone
These changes mentioned are for 4v3 and 4v4 - are they all applicable to V5 - as I have read the 0.16 has more support for DVB...
