Well it occurs on Standard def for me, haven't bothered with HD yet, the guide data is a little all over the place and have recorded hours of pretty logos and music in the past

Also HD works, but with the OSD the pictures grinds down a little. Need to do some tweaks on the video drivers. But till I have to, I'm not going to bother.

Running a Dvico DVB-t plus single tuner. (no hardware enc.)

So perhaps it is related to DVB?

as has been suggested I have updated the first post in the thread and added a thread summary - here is what ive put

As this thread is getting rather long I have updated the first post with the story so far
It seems the error "Error Was encountered while displaying video" happens during LiveTV watching in knoppmyth r5e50 and some previous versions

1) its been around for at least a year
2) there does not seem to be any commonality as to what hardware config it manifests itself in - a random collection of AMD/Intel processors and variety of motherboard
3) Its reported mainly here with DVB and HDTV recording but thats not definitive
4) It seems to happen at the program boundary when the backend wants to take a new 'LiveTV recording' file and the front end attempts to open it
5) There is a suggestion that it may be that the frontend is trying to open the new recording file before its been created
6) There is a suggestion that it could be related to Mysql DB performance problems
7) Some tweaks to my.cnf were applied and seemed to help a bit but the problem is still present
8 ) Mythtv has a ticket for this http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/2335
9) Ive tried various other distros and mythtv and its happening with mythdora and ubuntu + myth - so its unlikely to be a knoppmyth issue
10) mythtv .20 changes have been applied to r5e50 with no success
11) I seems that pressing the pause button during livetv can alleviate the problem as it gives the frontend more time to open the new file - this is not a solution for the channel surfer tho.

Let me know if ive missed anything or any of the above is incorrect.

One thing to find out, is the person using the EIT Grabber?
In my case, yes.

I'm using iceTV grabber. Pay service. I don't have the time to keep the free ones in check, had a lot of bad headaches in the past :(

Blast! :) , that may shoot down an Idea that I thought might have been the cause.

Another question to ask, does anyone have this problem have the occasional Zero length file along with "DVBRec(0) Error: Failed to open DVB device
eno: Device or resource busy (16)
" messages?

Well I have this problem and I'm dead in the water. I've installed Knoppmyth several times now and at first I was able to watch live TV but now every time I install, the first time I try to watch live TV I get the "error occured while displaying video" message and the backend seems to have stopped. Whenever I try to watch TV now I get "Could not connect to the master backend server --...". Rebooting doesn't reset the problem either. I have to reinstall to clear the backend server message.

I'm running:
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core 4200+
ASUS M2N32-SLI mobo
nVidia GeForce 7300 GS
Maxtor 300Gb 7200rpm SATA
2 X pcHDTV 3000

I set the cards up as DVB and scan for channels on both cards before trying to watch TV.

Anyone else totally dead like this? Anyone have any suggestions on how to at least watch "some" TV before it dies?

I'm using R5E50.

I think your problem may be more related to the backend dropping. If it drops while trying to start a live tv stream it is going to error out I would have thought.

Try starting with only 1 card and look into why the backend is dropping out all the time. I think most of the post in this thread are related to the "error occurred whilst displaying video" being the only problem.

Try following this thread and come back to this one if your still getting the error with a stable backend:

OK. Well, I reinstalled again and this time set up only one card and the backend ran fine for about 8 hours, then about midnight I got the error displaying video message. I don't think the backend had died thou because I just selected Watch TV again and it worked!

That sounds like the same symptoms the rest of us are experiencing;

I think the 'backend dies' is a separate problem with it's own population of hardware.
I never have a 'backend dies' problem, but I do get the 'error has occurred' screen randomly at 50 -60 % of the program boundaries...
