Fry's has a screaming deal today. Seagate 400GB 7200 rpm 8MB buffer EIDE/ATA 100 for $99.99 without rebates!

I have R5C7 running and tweaked perfectly. I would like to upgrade from a 160GB to the new 400GB hard drive. What is the best method or software to use to transfer everything over and use the new drive with the least amount of fuss?

The best option would be to follow the LVM article in the Wiki, which will walk you through making a new volume group. You'll make a new volume group for Myth, copy everything from the old one. Then you'll add the old partition (most of your 160) to the VB, giving you 500+ GB.

Thanks for the LVM tip, and I will use it if I have to; but I would like to use just one drive to cut down on noise and heat The old drive is pretty loud compared to the new drive.

I've upgraded my drive 4 times now (120Gig, 200Gig, 300Gig and now 500Gig) and I've used Norton Ghost version 7.5 everytime with no problems, it will even allow you to change the size of each partition (make them larger) before ghosting the drive.

If you do use Ghost, the corporate one does not support Linux anymore and you need to by the retail one. Read the box as it will state what OS's it will suport.

I remember reading somewhere else, not sure if it was on this forum, that there is a free alternative to Ghost for Linux but it took a few commands and configurations to get it to work. Ghost just works right out of the box and gets to work as soon as you boot from the floppy you create using the GUI front end on a Windows box.

I don't have a copy of Ghost, but I do have Acronis which worked fine. Even though it said it was copying over the MBR it still it told me Lilo had to be configured manually, and it did. When I first booted the new drive all I got was L99 99 99 99 ...

I wanted to make a Lilo repair floppy, but then remembered I did not have a floppy drive so this is what I did to get it to work for R5C7:

I booted using the KnoppMyth CD, and Quit to a command line.
mount /dev/ hda1 /mnt/hda1
mount -t proc none /mnt/hda1/proc
chroot /mnt/hda1
lilo -v
reboot
took out the CD and all was well :D

It seems simple now, but I did end up trying a lot of different combinations of mount and chroot commands to get it to work.

Personally I'm really coming to like Acronis, I've been using it on Windows desktops, servers and Linux boxen for a few months now. It's a good replacement for Ghost.

There just happened to be an article on cloning drives with open source software this morning on Digg.

I have not tried it, but if anyone is looking for free software that might help you could try Ghost for Linux http://freshmeat.net/projects/g4l/

I am really sad I missed this deal. I went into Fry's on Tuesday and they said it was a one day deal only. I should order the newspaper around holidays.
