Well, I finally got my basic install done. R5B7, up and working, and for the most part I'm extremely happy! No more lockups when watching live tv, I was able to record a program, and was playing with the MythMusic features last night, too. Anyway, some questions hopefully someone can help with :-)

I've got the MCE2005 remote - I assume it's the latest version, as I just ordered it from PCAlchemy.com. It works fine, and setup was a breeze. I'm wondering, does anyone have a button mapping file or something that is recommended? I'm still on the defaults, and basically I'm lost on what buttons do what, what keys are mapped to what, etc. I'm starting to figure out stuff with when watching TV (how do you "go to" a channel from the program guide??), but it would be nice to have a setup that was just right for the remote. I'm pretty sure you can do this, but I don't know how.

Also, in MythMusic, the button mappings seem less intuitive. Does anyone have any suggestions for what works best with that?

On the subject of MythMusic, is that what most people use to listen to MP3s and such? I'd also like to be able to listen to some streaming audio stations, too. The interface for MythMusic seems....ummmmm....OK (why do I have to rescan for music whenever I add something into the directory??), but maybe part of that is the remote buttons aren't mapped as well as they could be. Is there a list somewhere of what buttons do what for that, too? Or is there an alternative music program that is recommended?

All in all I'm very impressed - it's a fun learning project, and seems very cool. Hopefully I'll be getting a better case soon so I don't have my ghetto tower in the living room for long. But I'm happy so far! Any help or pointers would be great, and I'm sure I'll come up with some more questions as I get further into it. Thanks, and keep up the great work!

You might want to take a look at the support info i've posted at http://openmedia.co.nz/openmedia/content/view/27/58/ on the various MCE hotkeys.

I could probably put up a knoppmyth wiki page on the setup that would have the lirc files, sql to setup the hotkeys, and a howto. Just need to find a moment to write it.

Ahh, thank you! That gives me some good ideas...I'll keep reading on what/where/how to change things, too. Thanks again!

I'm looking into it some more, and it seems like the lircd.conf (that's the file, right? That maps the keys to hex values....) is set up right, except I think it's missing the hash button and maybe a couple others on the remote. But when I look at the CVS/SVN of lirc, the latest mceusb file also includes 4 color buttons or something. What do your lirc files look like?

The main "problem" I found, is that the rewind, forward, replay, and skip buttons all seem to be mapped PgUp and PgDn. I haven't had a chance to play with it much further, but at least in MythMusic I would expect rewind and forward to do their respective things, but replay and skip to start the track over and go to the next track respectively. I found where you can remap keys to functions for Myth, but the above problem with them all being mapped to the same two keys prevents that.

So I think I need to edit my .lircd file (thats the one that actually maps keyboard keys to the remote keys, right?). I intend on playing with it this weekend, but if there's already a good one out there, it seems silly to redo it! Thanks for any help and advice!

i've found that it's sometimes easier to remap keys using mythweb. it lets you change bindings that myth says you cant change.
