After installing nvidia and alsa drivers, tv playback works great! However, when I try to play a DVD the player windows opens, then goes full screen. Then it disapears and returns to the optical disk menu. Any thoughts?

If the disk is encrypted, KnoppMyth offers no out the box support for encrypted disks.

So I need to find an application that will play an encrypted dvd and tell mythtv to launch that application? Any thoughts on what would work?

If you do some searching, both here and the KnoppMyth wiki ( http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/ ) you should be able to find the answer. Keywords like "DVD" and "encrypted" would work, I bet...

So, it sounds like the KnoppMyth dvd player has been crippled on purpose? WHY??!?!?

From the sound of it, Xine plays all dvds "right out of the chute" with no extra efforts, but not the dvd player in KnoppMyth.

If I were to load standard Mythtv (not KnoppMyth) onto a computer, would there be this dvd playback limitation?

The MythTV in KnoppMyth is standard MythTV. No matter which Linux distribution you use (other than FreeSpire), there is no legal way to playback encrypted DVDs out the box (period).

Have you checked out the doc files included on the system? Look carefully in the directory /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/examples. With proper documentation, anything is possible.

One thing that got me before is I hadn't set the region code for the dvd drive!

Why would you get sued?

Does Pioneer or Sony get sued for making DVD players?
Does Cyberlink get sued for making PowerDVD playback software?
Does Intervideo get sued for making WinDVD playback software?

We're not talking about copying a dvd - just normal playback of the dvd.
It's perfectly legal to play commercial dvds you've bought or rented.

Because Pioneer, Sony, Cyberlink, Linspire, etc pay licensing fees to "DVD Copy Control Association" thus allowing above companies to produce hardware/software to play DVDs.

Well, I followed the hints (thanks for the hints ) and the dvd player seems to play the menus of all the dvds I've tried, but it won't go past the menus. It simply doesn't respond to keyboard or remote control buttons.

I've read that the Mythtv dvd player doesn't work with dvd menus in versions 0.19 and earlier. The SVN page indicates that the dvd player is being fixed or is fixed for Mythtv version 0.20.

I think the issue is being confused a little. If you are running R5C7 you are not using the MythTV internal DVD player most likley. You are using Xine, look in Settings>Media Setting>DVD Settings>Play Settings. If the play command say xine something you are using Xine. From what I recall MythDVD is being implemented in .20 which is not released yet. I would guess MythDVD may be included in SVN after 0.19 was released but I cannot say for certain.

Here are the details:

1. If I go to the Optical Discs menu and choose Play DVD, the dvd plays with previews and gets to the menu. You can't navigate the menus with a mouse or keyboard or an IR remote control so you can't go any farther.

2. If I exit Knoppmyth and go out to the x-windows desktop and run XINE, I can play dvds and the menus work, using the mouse.

I have not changed any settings for DVDs so the R5C7 default settings are what I have.

Are you saying that KnoppMyth uses a different default dvd player than stock Mythtv does?

Last I checked the KM default player for DVDs and VCDs is mplayer. You can double check this with the following command:


The new MythTV builtin one wasn't considered to be ready for prinme time by _anyone_ as of the 0.19 release. I beleive it was still marked experimental.

If player is set to use mplayer that could explain, I recall Mplayer having issues with menus.

maybe try the xine command filled in under Utilities/Setup>Media Settings>DVD Settings>Play Settings



I have always use xine without issues.
