Post subject: | Wireless extensions unsupported. |
Hi, I'm having an issue with my wireless network. I have had a Netgear Wireless router for some time (WGT624v3) and a wireless Netgear card (WG311T) in my mythbox for some time. I have tried to get them to talk to each other on several occasions. My latest attempt has had some limited success but only partial. You find me not able to connect to the router wirelessly. This is what I have done so far. I upgraded to the latest Madwifi drivers and followed the newbie guide to installing them. http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/FirstTimeHowTo Everything compiled and all the commands I entered appeared to do what the ought to. With one exception. I recieved this message. Quote: Warning: Driver for device ath0 has been compiled with version 19 of Wireless Extensions, while this program supports up to version 17. Some things may be broken. Looking at the madwifi pages I found this: Quote: I get: "Warning : Device ath0 has been compiled with version 15 (...)" This is easy to fix, you need to rebuild your kernel with the latest Wireless extensions bear in mind that new kernel tend to ship with the latest version, so it might be worth just upgrading. Following on from this I investigated the card further using this command cat /proc/net/wireless I dont get any untoward outputs. When I type iwconfig --version I get this output. Quote: iwconfig Wireless Tools version 27
Compiled with Wireless Extensions v.11 to v.17 Kernal Currently compiled with Wireless Extensions v.19 ath0 Recommnded Wireless Extensions v.13 or later Currently compiled with Wireless Extensions v.19 When I type dhclient ath0 The card looks for a network but is unable to get anywhere. It sees the essid, that the connections is managed and that the WEP encryption is in place. I recieve a message that no DHCP was offered and then sleeps. My wireless card sees the router and several other wireless networks in the area. My router does not - it doesn't even see my card. I am inclined to think that it is the router at fault, but I want to be sure that the wireless extensions are not casusing a problem. Incidenetly I have tried to connect with an XP based centrino laptop to this router and failed. I know the laptop works wirelessly and this laptop is usually connected to a wireless network (not this one). So, back to the original point of this thread: To resolve the wireless extensions from 17 to 19 issue what would that entail? Is is a big job? Is it worth it? Has anyone else had sucess with a Netgear WG311T card to a Netgear WG624v3 wireless cable modem router using the latest madwifi drivers? Any suggestions? Thanks Chris |

I have had the same error message before when using the acx drivers complied on the box. It didn't stop me connecting, and I don't think its significant. Interestingly I didn't get the errors (IIRC) in my latest install when using debs instead. |
