Post subject:  Volume control doesn't appear to affect the mobo line out

The control (remote or keyboard) shows bars up, or bars down, in all apps to which, sound applies, however, it doesn't affect the level coming out of my motherboard.

I should point out, I have a CreativeLabs Soundblaster card installed, which I'm not smart enough to get working, so I'm using the onboard sound.

Any ideas?

thanks in advance,

Joelb

I might be able to help you with this one. Though the information supplied could be a little more explanitory.

Several things to ask first off:
How are you outputting from your mobo? Standard anologue or digital?
Are you wanting to to use the soundblaster card instead?
Where are you trying to adjust the volume - through the menus or through alsamixer?

The easy bit is to enable yor sound card. Just disable it in your bios. It's be something like pressing delete on boot up and going to onboard devices and selecting onboard sound (possibly called AC97 - it should be obvious though) and turning it off. Plug in your soundcard and there you are. Myth should detect it.

If you are using a digital out - volume doesn't make any difference to the sound level it's the speakers that are the important bit.

What can make a differnece to overall sound levels is adjusting the master volume under >Utilities/Setup>Setup>General and it's on the third page. Your internal volume settings may not be on. There are several options to play with here.

If it alsa mixer, the levels you set in there should affect the overall maximum volume.

Alternatively perhaps you need to consider the fact that if you are outputting to a TV the master volume needs to be high-ish to power your speakers, then use the tv or whatever controls for the volume.

Good luck. Hope this helps.

edit - I just had a look at the manual for your mobo online and I think (though it wasn't very clear) it is exaclty what it said "A line out" meaning it is just outputting a signal. I don't think (though I could be wrong) it does volume. Just provides a signal nothing else realying on whatever is reciving your signal to do something with it.

Analog(ue) [British?] :)

I'd prefer to use the soundblaster, but again, I'm quite hardware dense.

Through the front end (keyboard, remote) I believe there is a disconnect between what the front end thinks it's doing, and getting those instructions to Alsamixer, but I don't know how to prove/diagnose it.

I'll look into this when i get home! thanks!

Yeah. We spell stuff properly over here. Though according to my dictionary - thought I'd spell check - does say in regards to electronic wave forms it is more usual to use the american version of anolog. Go figure.
