Post subject: | Timing issues |
I've been having a chronic problem with R5C7. As we are watching recordings, the timing gets off. The audio and video get out of sync and the show moves into a double fast speed. The only fix so far is to save position and exit and restart. Is there anyone else who has run into this who can offer suggestions on how to fix it? |

you need to give more information. ie. history -- worked with older release.. etc. hardware anything else you can think of that may be related. |

I've been working with Knoppmyth since the first R5A? editions came out. It has always worked well except for a period when I had a bad stick of RAM. Once that was replaced things have been smooth until R5C7. There too things seemed fine for the first while (probably 4-5 days in), but once the first crash happened, it has seemed chronically unstable. I reinstalled R5C7 from scratch, hoping to fix the problem if it was rooted in the database, but it has continued the same behavior. In playback mode, the timing issues seems to be the problem. When in live TV it seems the same problem is causing system freezes or front end failures. I don't know if changing some settings in the setup menu (I saw a few in the playback area that sounded as if they may be related) may help. My other option is to go back to the R5B7 edition. My fear is that the crash may have damaged some components, but I am trying to eliminate software problems first. The logs haven't told me much. Everything looks fine -- going from regular running messages to reboot messages. There was a dma error once, but it has never repeated. I'm running: Asus 7N8X-Deluxe motherboard Athlon XP 3000 512 Kingston ram an 80 gig seagate 7200 drive (I swapped this for the original WD 120 gig when I saw the dma error) Hauppauge 350 pcHDTV 3000 any hints? |

I think this is pretty unlikely. In 20 years and countless crashes, I have never seen physical component damage result.. except for when I opted to use a hammer instead of the keyboard. From everything you posted, it does look to be a problem introduced in R5C7. I would also go back to R5B7 to see if clears up the problem. If the problem persist after the downgrade, try the pulling the the TV cards to see if you can isloate the problem to one card or the other.. It could be one of the cards has developed problems. What was reason for going from B7 to C7? I am at R5B7 and because it has worked flawlessly since I got it setup, I have not needed to upgrade. |

Thanks for the input. I'll probably give it a try on Monday. I moved up to try out latest nvidia drivers so I could move to a true 1080i instead of 540p setting. The previous drivers didn't do the trick. I either got the split screen or with the older version some other odd behavior that kept it from working properly. |

that's a good reason to upgrade. Will the new nv drivers work under R5B7? You could install the kernel and drop the tarball from R5C7 onto R5B7 -- I would give even odds on it just working.. If the issue moved it would then be the nv driver that we could blame. You could also drop to 540p with the existing driver and if the problem goes away, we could also look at the nv driver as being the cause. |

I never got to the 1080i on the new edition. I wanted to get it working and stable first. One change at a time and all that. The new drivers should work just fine with B7. They just aren't there by default. |
