Ive tried adding the occasional extra application using apt-get (such as wpa- wifi support, a file browser, web browser, Gnome desktop, and even lshw, vncserver ) but found that the existing sources are very limited with many broken dependencies. If I choose other sources it generally breaks xorg or something else. OK, so I dont just want a stand-alone mythv box, but want the ease of installation of knoppmyth. I would like the ability to have at least: - Change the desktop background easily - right click select new image etc. - An icon on the xfce desktop to restart mythtv if I exited it. - A jumpoint on my remote so my 'power button' will start mythtv frontend if I had exited it. - the option for a different spash screen - An easy way to change the desktop picture - VNC into the machine and see the active mythtv desktop, not a new session. If there is a way to do any of this and i've missed it then I'd appreciate a pointer. Cheers nzruss BTW, I listened to Cecil's interview on the Linux Link Tech Show. Nice Job, good interview! |

The first and most important function in KnoppMyth is to be used as a PVR. Adding packages via apt-get should be easy. Unfortunately at the time when I built KnoppMyth on Debian unstable, it was just before Debian became stable. Given that changes in Debian during that period of time (thru to current changes) is the reasons folks have issue w/ apt-get. Changing one's source to the stable branch of Debian should resolve this. In future release (R6 (when it is ready)), Dale and I are looking toward making KnoppMyth more desktop friend. However, KnoppMyth first and foremost function will be to serve as a easy to use method of building one's own PVR. In this, I think it serves it purpose extremely well. And that will always be the yardstick I use in judging KnoppMyth's stability. nzruss wrote: BTW, I listened to Cecil's interview on the Linux Link Tech Show. Nice Job, good interview! Thanks.

To expand on that slightly, the directions can be found here - http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=SwitchingToStableAPTRepository |

Just as a FYI, I found myself struggling with Lynx, so I took a chance and installed Galeon, the Gecko based browser. works ok and is semi light on the resources. Take a second look at Lynx if you get a chance, once you get past the "text only" thing, its got a lot of features. |

mythdora provides an alternative. its very different from knoppmyth as it uses kde and is bundled with a whole bunch of stuff like k9copy and firefox..etc etc. so its more like a computer with mythtv rather than a pvr with a computer. |
