Post subject: | Running the Frontend from a laptop.. |
Hey.. I have my backend up and running. Its working fine and mythweb is also working. I want to be able to watch tv from my laptop (Dell Inspiron) and I know that you can booth the system up to run the frontend off the CD. My Problem les with the DHCP broadcast. When the "install" of the frontend is nearly complete the "Use DHCP Broadcast" question is asked; I say yes, and eth0 failed... I think this is because I am not hardwired, but how can i tell the setup to use the wireless setup? The Problem is not in the backend - I edited the sql file and changed the setup page to the actual IP (192.168.1.100). Any Ideas?? THANKS! ~Eric Wasserman~ |

One of the problems with using the cd as a frontend is that you are limited by what you can re-configure because of the read-only nature of the cd. A better way to implement frontends is to network boot from the backend. You can then do any re-configuration that is required to make your frontend perform as required (eg support different remotes/ video cards with native drivers etc). Have a look at this thread for details on using an NFSroot for a network booting frontend: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... ht=nfsroot |

Im a total linux newb - all this stuff is really difficult to understand and intimidating. My real need is for my moms lapto to be able to connect to the mythtv backend. This whole diskless solution is too much for me at the current time. The laptop runs windows xp and I would like to be able to run the frontend on it off the cd for her to be able to watch live tv and recordings. I tested the setup by testing the frontend from the cd on another computer that is hardwired. This worked. I have always had trouble with configuring wireless connections in linux. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! ~Eric~ |

If it needs to be wireless, I don't think you're going to be able to do this without remastering the boot CD to support your particular wireless setup. You may be better off using a windows type front end. Personally I just use a Samba share and play the files directly (using the /myth/pretty directory) if I need to. You could also check out some of the solutions here: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Unofficial_Plugins |
