I am not new to linux, but I am new to knoppmyth.

Can I use knoppmyth for other things besides mythtv? I know its built around mythtv, but I fear (possibly unfoundedly) that its so specialized that I wont be able to do anything else on the box but run mythtv. Is this true?

What about upgrading the base os to -stable? Does that work? Is there a knoppmyth cvs I can grab all the latest mythtv related stuff from?

To answer a few of your questions, there are people on this board (in particular mjl "Mike") that use there KnoppMyth box for more than just MythTV. He has integrated Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice to name a few. KnoppMyth uses the fluxbox window manager.

As to upgrading KnoppMyth via cvs you are most welcome too with MythTV, but KnoppMyth is a distribution not application. You are also welcome to use apt-get to update your distribution if you so desire, but this is not advisable.

Cecil puts in many hours to make the KnoppMyth package work as an easy implementation of MythTV, it is not designed nor recommended to be used for other purposes. Whilst some users have had success with adding other packages to the base installation, there can be dangers lurking around every corner.

I have added to a vanilla knoppmyth in several ways...WebCalendar for one. Easy to do but add to the complexity of upgrades. Has caused me to lag way behind current version.

That's actually an important point. The more you add to it, in the way that hondaman is suggesting, the more you'll have to do all (or mostly) over again when the next version of KnoppMyth comes out.

I use my knoppmyth box to run many applications. I use a xserver on my M$ windows computer to display the programs run on the myth box. Works great for certain things.
