Post subject:  New NVIDIA Driver 8774
On the surface it does not look all that exciting...

I loaded it yesterday. It seems fine.
I'm trying to decide if I see any improvements in video playback - not sure.

XvMC performance hasn't changed, but I think the big XvMC fix will come with Mythtv 0.20.

Currently running a build off the most recent 0.19-fixes branch and most of the XvMC issues appear to be resolved as long as you are running 8762 or newer.

Oh, I REALLY wish that were true. I'm currently running R5C7 which has the 0.19 fixes in it and , when I use XvMC, video playback freezes all the time - at playback start, randomly during playback, after a fast-forward, etc.

If I turn off XvMC, all that freezing stops, but the playback has more mpeg artifacts. For now, the freezing is MUCH more annoying than the blockiness.

Did you do an SVN update of some kind, which gives you some of the Mythtv 0.20 fixes???

Remember 0.19 fixes isn't a single version, it's a branch. A lot of changes have been made since the R5C7 release back in May. If you build your own from SVN or upgrade to R5D1 when Cecil announces it. You'll see a huge difference in any number of areas. Ok what are you using for your video playback settings, and have you tweaked anything with the nvidia-settings tool. I have got a profile now that has no issues with XvMC.

Well, in the TV Settings / Playback screen, I've got:
Deinterlace ON. Algorythm: kernel
the mpeg decoding set to "standard" (xvmc off)
extra audio buffering ON
(other check boxes on this screen are not checked)

I've not changed nvidia-settings. I've never seen it, in fact.
The only experimenting I've done is:
- turn xvmc on/off
- deinterlace on/off
- update nvidia drivers

So what settings work?

I do plan to update to R5D1, it sounds like just doing that will solve xvmc freezing, correct?

It sure did for me. I was having XvMC freezes on 720p programs. I couldn't get more than 5 seconds at a time before it would stall. Now, I'm sailing smooth. CPU utilization of X is down to about 5-7%. Tonight, for the first time ever, we were able to run commflag during primetime. It was running against the show we were watching (Prison Break!), which was extra impressive.
