Post subject:  power saving mode in KnoppMyth? - AMD processors
I just read about how-to put the AMD Athelon processors into power saving mode:

Is this already built-in to any versions of KnoppMyth?

If not, which startup file I would insert the command line for the power saving mode on my Asus nforce2 motherboard?

Proceed with extreme caution. The hardware technique used to do this can cause mysterious lockups related to disk activity.

I used athcool when I had an Xp1700 processor in my backend. When I activated it, you could hear the pitch of the CPU fan change (even though it was not a thermostatically controlled fan). The ptich also varied as the load varied on the box. I had not noticed this before activating athcool. Presumably the pitch change was because of the change in the load on the power supply.

The temperature of the CPU was significantly lower after activating athcool. I never had any of the problems that they warned about. YMMV.

TJC - caution warning noted. The same page I referenced tells how to avoid the disk problems you are talking about.

So how do you tell ATHCOOL to run at startup? Is there a startup file you edit to say "run athcool"?

This may be a loaded gun, and I understand. I just need someone to help me figure out how to load and FIRE it. :)

Make sure that the safety is on, that it's pointed in a safe direction, and then add it to the end of "/etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh". ;-)

I tried the ATHCOOL program. It said there was no supported hardware found on my motherboard.

I wonder if I have to turn on something in the motherboard bios?

Been using ATHCOOL for years on my nForce2 ultra based system with no problems at all... you can test the application before you force an automatic start at boot.

you do anything special to get ATHCOOL to work?
My Asus motherboard has the NVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430 chipset, so I'm surprised ATHCOOL didn't detect any compatible chips.

Not sure if this is the same as Athcool but you might also want to take a look at powernowd.

I've been using it on my AMD64 nforce4 Shuttle box (not running mythtv) to drop the CPU speed when the machine isn't busy. It seems to work well. However I couldn't get it working on my mythtv box which is running a Mobile Athelon XP on an Abit nforce3 motherboard. I guess my abit board doesn't support the frequency scaling so that's something to watch out for.

I followed the instructions here on the wiki and it worked for me.

My board uses the older nForce2 Ultra chipset...
