I have a backend server that acts as a km backend and as a local network server. It now has more than 600Gig of data, music, pictures and video. I have a front that accesses the backend via NFS redirect of /myth and of cause uses the backed Mythconverg db. Both backend and frontend is R5C7

I am a bit reluctant ugradng the backend because i have to make a major backup of +600gig fra the /myth lvm disks.

Can I upgrade the frontend to R5D1 and still have it to access the backend when the backend is R5C7 or do I have to upgrade both frontend and backend to R5D1.

I haven't been able to se what's the difference between R5C7 and R5D1.
/jK

I upgraded my frontend boxes before I did my backend and it worked just fine I was able to keep using eveything. When you upgrade your backend it will only touch the root partition it will not touch the /myth one.

Thank you Marty.
I will upgrade the frontend this comming weekend and see if it works. If it works ok I will consider upgrading the backend as well. I do have my second thought as i had to define the lvm manually because it is bigger than can be handled by the create_lvm.sh script.

Maybe with the upgrade to R5D1 I will be able to use a CF as frontend disk and make it virtual diskless (read silent).

My problem so far has been that i need to stop the frontend from writing to the CF as this wears the CF out. Right now the frontend runs with no swap so all i need more is to redirect /var to a NFS share on the backend as described in my posting:
