I've got my xorg.conf file like I want it, but every time I restart X or reboot, a new file with the wrong driver and resolution is created. How can I stop this from happening?

Are you booting from a CD to edit xorg.conf?

No, I installed to a hard drive.

How are you restarting X? The recommended way is using the command pkill xinit or by using ctrl-alt-backspace on a keyboard.

It sounds more like the nvidia installer is being run repeatedly, but lacking more details (like whether he has an nViida video card) it's hard to say.

Greg Frost: Usually I only restart X when I reboot the frontend. Once or twice I restarted it by using /etc/init.d/xsession restart.

tjc: I don't have an Nvidia card, but I'll check and see if the nvidia installer is running. I have an epia board which uses the via driver at 800x600. When I restart, it switches to the fbdev driver and 1024x768.

I ran the command 'update-rc.d -f install-nvidia-debian remove' then '/etc/init.d/xsession restart', but it still does the same thing.

Given the video card you have, Try adding an "exit 0" line right after the #! magic in /usr/local/bin/install-epia-unipro.sh

If that doesn't help, there's also the possibility that /etc/init.d/xsession is stepping on it around line 118 or so.

I had the same issue when I was using /etc/init.d/xsession restart. It clobbered xorg.conf every time. From now on, restart X using "pkill xinit" or ctrl-alt-backspace.
