Post subject:  Error Transcoding Recordings

I've tried to transcode some recordings, but when I look in the Job Queue it says that they've errored out. Now, AFAIK, the transcode users mtd which is the same thing that the dvd rip uses. I can rip dvds, so the mtd should be working, right?

There are known transcoding issues with R5D1, apparently just some bad patches in the SVN version used, which have since been fixed.

So how do I get transcoding to work on my machine?

Yes, please, how I can I patch the MythTV (0.19) via SVN to allow transcoding?

R5C7 used "0.19 fixes" and lossless transcoding worked just fine with it. The problem is that "0.19 fixes" was quite a long series with a lot of changes along the way, so the KM version (which maps to a particular SVN change number) is what matters. What version of KM are you using?

I'm running the R5D1 release. Will the transcoding work in the next release that has .20?

Okay, I've decided to go ahead and give this a shot. Can you give me a link to directions to do this? I didn't see any instructions on how to do this when I searched.

Go to cecil's post (time=9:22).

I followed these directions and it worked just fine to go from r5d1 0.19 to 0.20. My comments are later in the thread.

cecil is da man...

So basically upgrading to 0.20 will fix my transcoding problems. I'll give it a shot over the wknd.

Quick side question. If I transcode a recording, does it stay in the Recordings section and behave like a nontranscoded recording? That's the reason I haven't converted stuff to divx. I don't want to have to use the video player to handle the recordings.

I believe so.

Okay, so I upgraded to 0.20 and everything went swell. I can now transcode my files. However, when I transcode a file, it gets bigger, not smaller!

My original files are about 2GB an hour. After transcoding, they're not 2.2GB an hour. I thought the nuv format was supposed to reduce them to 700MB an hour? What am I missing?

EDIT: Well, I changed the codec from RTJpeg to MPEG-4 and I'm down to 700MB an hour. :) Now I jus' gotta figure out the nuvexport stuff. :)

It appeared that transcodes were not working on my R5D1 install, but it seems that if there's 2 seconds at the start of the show before the first cut point the transcoding works ok. So if I select a point, say, 5 minutes into a recording and insert a cut point to delete before that point, the transcode will fail. If I add a cut point 2 seconds into the recording to delete after that point the transcode will work fine. So an "open-ended" cut list seems to cause problems.

And just to make it more confusing, every now and then a transcode will fail but running it a second time will succeed.

This is a workaround more than a solution, but for the most part I can get transcode to do what I want.

Would be interesting to know if anyone else gets their dodgy transcoding to work this way.

I upgraded from R5C7 where lossless transcoding worked to R5D1 +.20 and now transcoding doesn't work. Where should I start? Is there a log to look at to see what or where it fails? Thanks, Joel
