1.) streamzap USB remote for lirc
2.) matroxset
3.) fbset
4.) documentation ! :)

I'd also like a more clear understanding on how tv output works (ie. when I boot with tv as the kernel option it doesn't output to tv - do I have to install it for that to work?)

tv <ENTER>
This will set your video adapter to a resolution of 800x600.
That is all it does....

1.) streamzap remote - how about you (at least) compile the driver into lirc (http://sourceforge.net/projects/szremote/)

2.) matroxset and fbset are tools used to get a second head outputting to your tv (http://davedina.apestaart.org/download/ ... TO-0.1.txt)

3.) The docs don't really cover where things are, how things are set up, etc. For instance, I think I'll have to recompile the kernel to get my matrox working - are there any things I should keep my eye out for?

Let me start by saying that I don't have anything to do with knoppmyth development, but I can say that you can only compile lirc for one remote, and I believe that the pvr250/350 grey remote is a good default. The ability to compile for several remotes would have to come from the lirc developers.

Xsecrets -

Not sure you last statment is accurate, you can select multiple remote types when you compile lirc, but you will get separate modules from it as a result: lirc-serial, lirc-i2c, etc. . . .

Whether you would want more than one module loaded at boot is another matter.

LIRC config files handle the remote codes so that is separate from the compile.

Ok must have changed since the last time I compiled LIRC which really wasn't all that long ago, but at that time it only let you select one remote. Of course I was using the script, I suppose with a long string of configure commands you could include support for multiple remotes.
