Post subject:  Switching hardware: backup/restore or install from scratch?

I'd like to switch hardware and am trying to figure out whether I should do a backup/restore or install from scratch. My old system is:

* Celeron 2.5GHz
* PVR-350 (capture and TV-out)
* KnoppMyth R5C7

New system will hopefully be:

* Via EPIA-M10000 (TV-out)
* PVR-350 (capture only)
* KnoppMyth R5D1

It would be nice to save my settings, stations, recording schedule, etc. I don't care so much about the actual programs. I'll probably delete most of the recordings to limit the amount of data I have to transfer.

Will backup/restore help me with this scenario, or am I better off installing from scratch?

Thanks in advance,

Boris

If you don't care about your existing recordings, it's pretty much six to one, and a half dozen to the other. <shrug>

Cool. I guess what I'm ultimately concerned about is that I don't want the restore to overwrite hardware-specific files. My TV-out will be changing, so it sounds like I should remove XF86Config from the backup tarball before restoring? Anything else?

Not that I can think of.

BTW - XF86Config-4 doesn't get restored by default. You've got to include it it your supplemental restore list if you want it. My "Taking advantage of the enhanced backup and restore scripts" posting contains details of what is restored.

Hi,
Just be advised R5D1 and the 350 require special care to obtain tv out. R5C7 only seems to have a simple log roll over error which is an easy fix.

If you do a backup before switching hardware, then do an upgrade on the new hardware and restore will give you back the mythtv setup stuff for the menus & etc. BESURE not to change hostname! Write it down just to be sure or things get unhappy. Not broken, just unhappy.

If you want to just boot up with the new hardware, edit the XF86Config-4 file and make the display driver vesa before you switch.

If you simply switch hardware and reboot then you may need to run netcardconfig, alsaconf, and ntpdate to get the basics working. If you made the vesa change, xserver should come up and you can make the finer tweaks as you go along. ~ 15 minute task :)

Check the wiki, good ideas there.

If you decide to go the upgrade path be sure not to miss the "Hints for upgrading to R5D1" posting here: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11293
