Hello, Ive just upgraded my hardware from an old system to a new Spangly system and case. Swapped HD over and put it in the new system. All works fine and i can do more things with it without stuttering. However, if left on for a while the machine will lockup completely. To get it back i have to hard reset the machine. It has locked up in the following situations: Live Tv Myth Main Menu Myth Choose recordings -------------------------------------------- The system Spec: KnoppMyth R5A26 -------------------------------------------- Motherboard:MSI K8MM3-V - VIA Chipset CPU:AMD 64BIT SEMPRON 3000 S754 (1.8G) RAM:Corsair PRO 512mb 3200 Graphics: MSI nvidia FX5200 HD:Seagate Barracuda 250Gb Capture Cards:Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-T PCI (x2) -------------------------------------------- I have had a look at the logs, but to be honest iv enot sure what to look for. Im aware of the VIA DMA problem, but what symptons relate to this? Where should i start to debug this? Thanks Jim |

I had similar behavior when I tried to overclock my Sempron 3100+... are you sure that you actually bought a 3000, or did your vendor OC a 2600? |

Its defo a 3000. I bought the CPU and system and made it myself. Any thoughts on why its crashing? Im trying various options. But as i cant force it to crash its takign along time to solve. |

Hi, Boot from the cd and do F2 to see what to enter for the memtest command. Let it run for a long time, should stay clean. (process of elimination) Mike |

Ive now done a Memtest and found a fault. Im gonna try and get a new memory. Do companies normally change faulty memory? |

I have now changed the memory and done a test on that. all okay on the memory. Upgraded to R5D1. Still the same problem. Complete lock up after a ramdom time. Any ideas? Thanks |

I was getting hard locks for a while when my system wasn't getting enough air flow and would overheat. It could be your system is trans/encoding videos in the background, heating up the system to the point where it faults and hard locks. If it locks up at least once a day, you might try leaving it with the case open and see if the extra air flow helps it. If so, you may need a larger or faster fan/heatsink/powersupply/ect. |

It could still be your memory. I've had lots of memory pass memtest and still be bad. Overclock the memory by 10% and run memtest for around 12 hours to see if it is ok. You may also want to check the voltage on the memory in the BIOS. It needs to be 2.8V for DDR400. You could also slow the memory down/loosen the timings and see if it still locks up. |

After a long long long time fault finding i can put my finger on the problem. The mem test was okay. I have removed the Motherboard from the Case and placed the TV cards in one by one testing each time over a 24 hour period. (It would normally fail overnight) I then replaced the TV cards back into the right angle riser card supplied with the Silverstone LC11 case. It failed with 2 tv card attached. More specifically it would fail it a TV card is attached to the PCI slot which is attached used the extension cable PCB. Any ideas how to solve this problem? |

You could try playing with the pci bus timing if your bios allows that but it sounds like the riser is either bad or not compatible. I would check with the manufacturer if you can. Joel |

I have a similar problem that I've actually managed to narrow down to the power supply. The system will hang with no response to the keyboard or remote and then I'll have to hard reset it. My bios would reset and after checking things and reconfiguring I found that the 5v rail was only supplying 4.6v. There is a +/-5% tolerance on the rails of a power supply before the motherboard will start complaining and 0.4v is over the tolerance range. I haven't replaced the power supply yet because it's intermittent (and I'm cheap). You mentioned that the case is new so the power supply could be an issue. Poor power delivery can also give memory errors like you are seeing. |

That's a good question so I looked it up. All the DDR400 that I've used (Crucial Ballistix, OCZ Platinum, OCZ Gold, and some Corsair) is all 2.8V but Crucial's low end memory is 2.6V and I'm sure a lot of other brands are probably not 2.8V either. I know I've fixed a lot of memory problems by raising the voltage from 2.6 to 2.8. I've had lots of bad memory too but it was all rated at 2.8V and I never went over that. Joel |

Typically the faster DDR memory needs higher voltage to run properly. I have Corsair PC3200 low latency sticks in my myth box and it runs fine at 2.7v. I have generic ram from Tiger Direct that runs at 2.6v (but it's pc2700). I read a whole bunch on it when I was picking the memory on the over clocking forums. You can basically go to those forums and look for your memory and board and find settings that are stable. |
