If you plan to updating to R4V3 from an earlier version as root:
NOTE: I HIGHLY recommend checking the DB first. Starting in R4V3 mythbackup will check and fix before backing up.
Code:
mythbackup

In addition, you'll need to backup /home/mythtv/.mythtv, I recommend:
Code:
tar cvjpf /myth/backup/mythtv.tar.bz2 /home/mythtv/.mythtv

When you do a Auto Upgrade, the restore will restore it. You must name this file mythtv.tar.bz2. If you changed any files in etc, you can include those in the tarball as well. For example if you modified /etc/mythtv/modules/bttv, you'll do something like this:
Code:
tar cvjpf /myth/backup/mythtv.tar.bz2 /home/mythtv/.mythtv /etc/mythtv/modules/

NOTE: i586 is now the default debs. This way the CD can be used as a frontend on more systems. If you do have a i686, the CD will work on it as well.

If everything is working fine you don't have to upgrade. The install is the same process as with R4V2. I'll annouce when the ISO has made it to mirrors.

Aren't file names with spaces in them a giant pain in the butt... :(

Code:
root@black:~ # mythbackup
tar: ./home/mythtv/.mythtv/MythNews/The: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: Register: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: ./home/mythtv/.mythtv/MythNews/Debian: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: Security: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: Advisories: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

Hi,
Is it worth it to upgrade to R4V3 from a WORKING R4 install?

I see lots of tempting changes but have no major failures to prompt a definite upgrade decision.

Should I stay (at R4) or should I go (to R4V3)??

THANKS!

Andrew Lynch

I did all the recommneded checks and back ups before upgrading to R4V3.

After the upgrade I had to fix a couple other things like /etc/fstab and ownership of the /myth/tv on my second HD.

All of my recordings show up in the the list but seem inaccessable. I can't play them, the /usr/local/bin/mythlink.sh script ignores them, ...

I've searched the forums without any luck. Can someone please provide the clue needed to fix the restore problem at least? :(

UPDATED - All the times in the restored database disagree with the file names by three hours... (Is this because it restored using PDT?)

Check your permissions. Run the frontend from an xterm, try to play something then exit. You should see some output.

The CD defaults to PST/PDT and won't (or wouldn't in R4V2) let you change that. As a result the restore ran in PST and all the times were 3 hours off. Manually running mythrestore once I'd set the correct timezone seems to have fixed it..
