I recently upgraded my BE from an R5 alpha to R5C7, overall the process was extremely smooth and as always, kudos to Cecil & his team for another outstanding job.

My question is re: mythVideo. I have a number of .avi files which I view using MythVideo. Some of these .avi files were obtained by ripping DVDs using "Excellent" quality, and the rest were DL'd from the net.

One glitch I have encountered is now, when any .avi file in MythVideo is played there is no audio. The previously-installed version R5 alpha played these same .avi files correctly. All .vob files ("Perfect" rip) play back correctly also (then and now).


Any ideas?

Are you doing anything with spdif/digital audio?

For example I've got digital sound setup on my machine and I had to go through the configuration pages to add -ao alsa:device=digital (digital is the name of my audio device) to the mplayer lines in order to get sound out of it.

if not, maybe you could describe your system better...?

Nope, using the onboard analog audio ports to my speakers.

Further investigation reveals some clues (although I remain clueless):

On R5C7, this is the output from mplayer when playing an .avi of a DVD imported on that system using "Excellent" compression:

For now I'm getting around the issue by using the internal player for mythvideo rather than mplayer as described in this thread:

Basically, in

setup>media settings>video settings>player settings

change

There is a post (sorry I found it last year so not sure where it is) that tells how to create under /home/mythtv/.mplayer directory configuration files to tell mplayer what audio track to play.

Filename format VIDEONAME.avi.conf or VIDEONAME.mpg.conf
(where video name has to be exact!)

These files contain one line;

aid=1

This is for english in my case. I have to do this for all .avi and .mpg files, without these no audio.

Hope this helps.

BTW - upgraded to R5C7 (X was corrupted on my build from last year) - painless and awesome thanks Cecil and friends!

Thanks for the tip, it works perfectly.

Also - it turns out out that you can avoid creating a separate conf file for every avi file. Set up a command line especially for avi files as follows:

setup > media settings > videos settings > file types

extension: avi
command: /usr/bin/mplayer -aid 1 -fs -zoom -quiet -vo xv %s
use default: <unchecked>
ignore: <unchecked>

All avi files will then play with audio using this command.

This is still a problem with the latest Knoppmyth R5B7. An xvid video with mp3 audio in an .avi container won't play audio if the standard mplayer is used. Switching it to Internal works fine. Standard mp3 files and xvid with ac3 files play fine.

Is there a place where you can formally submit and search for bugs ala bugzilla?

KnoppMyth releases don't change after they're created, so that is only to be expected. The "latest" R5B7 is the original R5B7, which is a fairly old release.

The _latest_ public release is R5E50, the one before that is R5D1, and before that R5C7. Frankly, I think someone gave you some rather questionable advice.
