Post subject:  Live TV starts Skipping when OSD appears.

Basically what is happening is when the OSD appears on the screen to change and channel or whatever the video and the sound start skipping. I have tried the following:

Upgraded the nvidia driver to the newest version and added the ___Option "UseEvents" "True"___It does reduce the xorg load but does not fix skipping.

I have tried all the different codecs --- No change

Add more Memory -- 256 up to 512 mb -----NOPE

Used a newer HD ---- no change

I have this same machine running R5D1 and it is perfect.

HArdware:

MSI 6315
1ghz
512gb pc133 memory
pvr-250 model 980
Nvidia 5200 pci video

root@myth2:~# cat /proc/interrupts
CPU0
0: 1988880 XT-PIC timer
2: 0 XT-PIC cascade
5: 35670 XT-PIC eth0
8: 1 XT-PIC rtc
9: 161119 XT-PIC Intel 82801BA-ICH2, nvidia
10: 858 XT-PIC uhci_hcd:usb1
11: 1 XT-PIC acpi, uhci_hcd:usb2
12: 10850 XT-PIC ivtv0
14: 13520 XT-PIC ide0
15: 147184 XT-PIC ide1
NMI: 0
LOC: 0
ERR: 6
MIS: 0

Interrupts look good..

DMA is on

Any ideas? I have already searched the forums and tried many of the fixes but nothing has worked yet, I guess it could be hardware.. I'll try that next.

I personally think it's a bug, as I've seen quite a few others having the same problem and there doesn't seem to be a fix yet.

So I guess it's just "normal" at this point.

I saw this too, on a new EPIA system. I figured it was that the wimpy EPIA graphics chip / TV out couldn't keep up. Looks like it's a bigger problem than I thought.

Have you checked/fixed the xvmc library path as noted in the Upgrade hints and hazards post by tjc? (http://www.mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13108&highlight=xvmc+fix+r5e50)

Its item 10 under Known Issues.

Through much searching and tinkering, I've found the following work really well for me. I have no skipping when I change channels, nor when the OSD is on screen anymore (using NVIDIA drivers 9746):

Code:
        Driver      "nvidia"
        Option "UseEvents" "True"
        Option "NvAGP" "2"
        Option "RenderAccel" "1"

The NvAGP parameter can be changed between 1-3 and alters which AGPGart the driver uses.

This now works to the point where I've started to use Myth to actually whatch live TV, where I've never done that before, mainly using it for watching downloaded movies and watching things I've recorded.

I also have this issue on R5E50. Changing the nVidia drivers to anything but 8776 made playback worse, and no amount of xorg.conf tweaking seems to be able to fix the problem. I have a 1.8GHz P4 with an FX5200 graphics card.

Any ideas?

Tim

I've adjusted my XVMC lib path, but now that I've done that if I actually choose xvmc I get a:

Failed to Reinit Video

Error was encountered while displaying video

Previously with the "wrong" path it would work (but my guess is that it wasn't really doing xvmc then since the path was wrong?)

"stock" R5E50 drivers for my Nvidia GeFore 6150.

Well, upgrading the drivers fixes the reinit failed with XvMC now.

On to some more tweaking.

Oh yea I have tired all of the ABOVE! Still the same problem. As an experiment I d/led Mythdora. That is Myth based on Fedora Core just to see what is will do on the same machine.
EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT! Ran like a top. OSD looks good and I never see a skip.
We need to find the one item that is causing the problem. I do NOT want to use mythdora, I love my knoppmyth. My home systems are still running myth.19 and R5D1 so once this bug is figured out.. Hopefully SOON!.. I will install get them updated.

I wonder if it's the SVN code? I think Mythdora has the SVN updates but R5E50 does not? (I don't think they have the same updates?)

But I'm not sure.

What drawing method are you all using?

I don't see this with the OSD, so I'm wondering if it's a setting difference.

Post subject:

Pardon the stupidity here, but when you say "drawing method" what setting are you referring to? (is that in the General setting under Playback?)

Post subject:

Something like that, yeah. I was also thinking ot the QT vs OpenGl thing.

I need to go look at the setup screens to get a list of "settings of interest".

Video driver types are probably on the list too...

I do know that even after I'd upgraded to the latest Nvidia drivers, the problem was still there.

But I left all the other settings the default (meaning what you can set in the GUI).

I will say that I have tried other themes like "blue" whatever it was, and actually that seemed worse than the "overlay" of Titivilius or whatever it's called.

OK, under Utilities/Setup -> Setup what are your settings for:

-> Appearance
    -> screen 1
      - Paint Engine
      - Qt Style
    -> screen 5
      - Use transparent boxes
      - Popup background method

-> TV Settings -> Program Guide -> screen 1
    - Guide shading method
-> TV Settings -> Playback -> screen 1
    - deinterlace/method
    - MPEG decoder
    - Enable OpenGL vsync timing
